Dear Parents
As the busyness of Term 4 can at times tend to consume our thoughts, it is important that we take some quality time to reflect on the year that has been, celebrate achievements and offer gratitude for what we have and for what others have done for us.
With this being the second last newsletter of the year, I will take this opportunity to recognise the wonderful contribution our Year 6 cohort has made to Our Lady of Lourdes. I, along with their teachers, have only but admiration of their growth, achievements, and positive attitude towards school life. The end of each year brings a sense of excitement in the lead up to Christmas, but it is a time where we must sadly say goodbye to our Year 6 students. I have had the absolute privilege to have been able to witness their journey since their first day of Prep.
On Monday night, OLOL hosted a Mass and Dinner for the Principals and executive leadership team members of the Toowoomba Catholic Education Office. Our school captains and sports captains played leading roles in welcoming the guests to our school community. Their roles in the Mass and their amazing service at the dinner were well received and were widely commended on their confidence, maturity, and genuine character by the visiting principals. I was a very proud Principal…well done!
On behalf of the school community, I wish each and every one of our departing Year 6 students all the very best for your transition into secondary school. I trust you will thoroughly enjoy your remaining school days here at OLOL. Farewell and God bless.
2021 Staffing & Classes
We are currently working through the proposed class lists for 2020. All going well, these should be finalised by the end of next week. Families will be notified by 1st December. Continuing our efforts to reduce class sizes, we are able to offer an additional class in Year 2 next year. As a result, our class structure for 2021 will be:
- 2 x Prep classes
- 2 x Year 1 classes
- 3 x Year 2 classes
- 3 x Year 3 classes
- 3 x Year 4 classes
- 3 x Year 5 classes
- 3 x Year 6 classes
Therefore there will be some change as to where the classes will be situated around the school. I will include a site map in the next newsletter indicating where the classes will be in 2021.
Class Placements 2021
We are fast approaching the time where classes for 2021 will be finalised. Teachers are currently working on class placements for the 2021 school year. This will be done in close consultation with the Learning Support Teachers and school Admin team to ensure a correct balance is created for all year levels, in regards to boys/girls, support needs, peer relationships and matching teaching and learning styles as much as possible. If required, I ask parents to email me directly by Wednesday 18th November with any information that may assist us in the formation of the classes. Usually, most requests have already been taken into consideration by the class teachers. Following the consultation process with teachers and learning support staff, the final decision on placement is the decision of the Principal. Fortunately, we have the privilege of experienced, passionate, and dedicated teachers in every class. Our results speak volumes to the talents of our teachers. It is very much a collaborative team approach to achieving the best possible outcomes for every student.
Book Lists
Once all class placements have been finalised, 2021 book lists will be forwarded home. Once again, all required book list items will be available from Browns Bookstore. I certainly urge all families to utilise the service Browns offers. This not only takes the pressure off families having to shop around for various book list requirements but also ensure that all students commence the school year fully prepared from day one.
Step Up Day & Prep Orientation
All our incoming Preppies for 2021 were posted invitations last week, welcoming them to our wonderful school and inviting them and their parents to attend an Orientation Morning on Tuesday 24th November from 9:00 – 10:00am. A meet and greet for all 2021 preppie parents will be held in the hall during this time. All other classes will spend the morning experiencing what school life is like in the grade above. This Step-Up session will run from 9:00am to 10:30am. Please be aware that the class they visit during this session may not necessarily be the class or the teacher they will have in 2021. It is just designed to provide a taster of what to look forward to in the new year.
Reminder…. Traffic Management System
To alleviate the traffic congestion during the morning drop off and afternoon pick up times, a traffic management system has been created. Yesterday, all families should have received a hard copy of the written instructions and a site map of the school precinct with the direction of travel highlighted. Remember…. left in, left out for both car parks. For your convenience, these documents are also attached to this newsletter.
The main issue I wish to reiterate, is our genuine request for parents utilising either Stop, Drop and Go zone, to delay your afternoon pick up time until after 3:00pm. The children are supervised every afternoon until 3:30pm. There is no need for parents to arrive at the Stop, Drop & Go zones prior to 3:00pm. This practice is the major contributing factor to traffic congestion in the afternoons.
As mentioned in my letter, we will closely monitor the flow of traffic over the next week. We really would appreciate that all parents and carers closely follow the new direction of travel when utilising either the Church or main carparks. I would also greatly appreciate it if you could pass these instructions to grandparents or other people who may collect your children from school.
Not only will this system help create a more efficient traffic flow but most importantly a much safer environment for all members of the School and Parish community. I thank you in advance for your ongoing co-operation and patience.
End of Term Events
Even though we have endeavoured to conduct as many events as possible for the kids which were not able to be held earlier in the year due to the lockdown and COVID 19 restrictions, some of our traditional end of year activities will continue to entail restrictions of some sort. Please take the time to note the following changes.
- The Final Assembly will be held on Thursday 19th November at 2:00pm. Attendees for this event are limited to parents of Year 6 students and parents of Year 5 students receiving academic awards only.
- Prep Orientation morning will be held on Tuesday 24th November from 9:00 to 10:00am. Parents of 2021 Preppies are cordially invited to attend an information session in the hall during this time.
- Due to difficulty to keep the number of people down, we have had to limit the Christmas Concert to our Preppies only. This concert will be held on Monday 30th November at 2:00pm in the hall. Unfortunately, our Year 1-4’s will not be involved in a Christmas Concert this year.
- Our annual Yr. 6 Graduation Mass will be held on Monday 1st December at 6:30pm. Due to the restrictions, this very special event will be held in the hall instead of the Church. Attendees are limited to two adults per Year 6 student.
- The Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday 2nd December at the Glennie Pool. Unfortunately, no spectators are permitted at this event.
- Our End of Year Thanksgiving Mass will go ahead on the last day of term, Friday 4th December at 12:00pm. Unfortunately, attendance is restricted to students and staff only. Students can be collected from school following the conclusion of the Mass.
Swimming Carnival
I would like to draw your attention to the information that has been included in the past two newsletters regarding the annual school swimming carnival which will be held at the Glennie Pool on Wednesday 2nd December. The information is again included in this newsletter for your convenience. Please take the time to carefully read this information so you are fully informed about the carnival. Please note, the carnival only applies to all students in Grades 3-6. May I draw particular attention to the participation of 8 year old students, no spectators at the pool and drop off and pick up arrangements. I strongly urge all students to show their support of their respective sporting house and participate to the best of their ability, whether in the pool or as a supporter.
School Fees
I do ask for your assistance in making sure that all accounts are finalised by the end of November. Last week we forwarded home hard copies of the school fee statements following a few families reporting that they did not see or realise the invoices and statements have been electronically forwarded home each term. Please be aware of these emails as we will be continuing to forward them home electronically in 2021 on a quarterly basis. We have recently placed several large resource orders including new classroom furniture and IT hardware. Payment of these will be made a lot easier if all school fees and levies have been received. A big thank you to all families who have paid these quarterly invoices on a timely basis.
As always, we have endeavoured to keep school fee increases to a minimum. The increasing cost of I.T. software and teaching and learning Apps has meant an introduction of an I.T. levy per student. This amount, is a very minimal addition but will go a long way to assist the school in our ability to continue to provide up-to-date digital resources.
2021 School Fee and Levy schedule is as follows:
Our Lady of Lourdes has one of the lowest school fee schedules amongst the schools in Toowoomba as we are forever conscious of the increasing financial demands placed on families. We certainly punch well above our weight class when it comes to providing a high level of resourcing and a variety of opportunities for all students. Our teaching and support staff are second to none and the continual upgrade of school buildings and grounds will continue into the new year.
In saying this, school fees and levies are not meant to place a burden on any family. Please do not hesitate to come in and see me if you are experiencing any financial difficulty so alternate measures can be discussed.
Thanks for reading…..
Chris
School Fees 2020
School Statements have been emailed and hard copies have also been printed and given to the eldest child in your family to bring home. It would be appreciated if all school fees are finalised by Friday 27 November. If, however, you are experiencing difficulty making payments, please contact Mrs Buckley on 4591 1200 to discuss options or to set up an appointment with Mr Golightly.
Book Week - Curious Creatures Wild Minds
Both Mrs Buckley and Mrs McCallum had fun in Admin with the Book Week Dress up, and are happy to share a couple of photos with our 'Mini Me's'
This term has been another great term and like we always seem to say, it has flown by very quickly! I have been fortunate to attend both the Year 6 and Year 5 camps this term, the most recent being the Year 5 camp last week. School camps are tremendous opportunities to learn new skills and interact with each other outside the classroom and school walls. Fun activities, team sports, teamwork challenges and new responsibilities in managing their time and their belongings away from parents or guardians, provide valuable learning experiences and many memorable moments. School camps also provide an opportunity to encounter new activities such as caving and snorkelling around Great Keppel Island like our Year 6 students got to experience, or paddle boarding and archery like our Year 5s.
Importantly too, teachers get to know their students in a different light and find teachable moments when challenges seem too tricky, especially when students are becoming tired from the many activities in the sunshine. Last week, there were many opportunities on our Year 5 camp to remind students about the importance of actively participating, persevering and maintaining a positive outlook even when tired or activities seem too hard. It was great to see them all rise to the challenge and demonstrate potential leadership skills ready for Year 6 in 2021. Be sure to check out some great camp pics in the Year 5 section of the newsletter below.
Report Cards
Report cards for Semester Two each year are based on learning that has occurred in Term Three and Term Four and report on student achievement against the Australian Curriculum year level achievement standards.
The learning areas that are assessed this semester are Religion, English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health and Physical Education, Digital and/ or Design Technology and any number of our specialist learning areas including Visual Arts, Music, Drama and/ or Dance. All report cards will include an English, Mathematics and General Comment.
A student who receives a C grade has typically shown their year level achievement and the teacher has sufficient evidence of learning to assign the overall grade for that learning area.
The following table provides an explanation of the A-E reporting scale.

Faith & Religious Education News
Thanks to the Year 6 leaders who were representatives of our school at the Principals Conference Mass and dinner. We thank Mrs Wagner and her merry band of helpers for organising and serving the dinner for the Principals of our Diocese. A great night was had by all.
We hope our volunteers enjoyed their thank you morning tea yesterday. We always value the help these people give to us throughout the year.
We are also calling for donations for our Mini Vinnies Christmas Appeal- this year we are asking for donations of gift cards. Please send in gift cards from grocery stores, toy stores, variety stores and pharmacies. We will send these to our St Vincent De Paul Chapter for distribution amongst the less fortunate in our parish community.
On Thursday, 19th November we have our final assembly with the Year 6 students. This assembly will start at 2:00pm.
The Prep classes are also preparing their Christmas Concert for Monday, 30th December at 2:00pm.
There will be lots of prayer celebrations and class activities marking the end of the year – please make sure you keep up to date with the newsletter and class news items.
During the last week of school, we have our Year 6 Graduation ceremony on Tuesday, 1st December at 6:30pm. Please remember we are limited to 2 parents and their child. Our Ceremony will be held in the school hall. If you are able to help in any way to aid in the preparation of these ceremonies, please contact the Year 6 class teachers to check with the organising team, as soon as possible.
Our OLOL End of Year Mass will be on Friday, 4th December at 12 noon in the school hall. Unfortunately, this Mass will be limited to children only due to numbers in the hall. Children are able to be picked up after Mass if you should wish to do so.
Have a great week!
Cheers

Assistant Principal Religious Education (APRE)
Prep
Welcome to Week 6.
We certainly have had a lot of fun over the last two weeks with Book Week and our Fairy Tale Banquet. Please enjoy perusing the photos of our days.
This week finds our classrooms starting to look a lot like Christmas… We haven’t started playing Michael Buble tunes just yet, but we have started preparation for our Christmas Liturgy to be held on Monday 30th November in the hall.
It may look like we are starting to wind down for the year, however our classroom routines, learnings and expectations are still at the forefront of everyday. Please ensure your child is at school on time ready to commence by the 8:30am bell. It is imperative that we continue with our routines to optimise learning and behaviour. Please also remind your children about school rules and this includes walking in and around the school both before and after school.
Today is the last day of library borrowing for the year. All books are due back next week. Children should be reading nightly, both home readers and picture books for enjoyment. Continue to revise sight words and practise writing at home. Make it fun and begin to write out Christmas cards, shopping lists, wish lists or letters to Santa.
We are currently accepting Gift Card Donations for the St Vincent de Paul Appeal. Please hand them to the class teacher and they will be forwarded to the office.
As the weather warms up (and cools down again), it is vital all children have a water bottle, jumper and hat daily.
Prep W are leading the school on Thursday with their Prayer Assembly.
Dates to Remember
Step up to Grade 1 – November 24th
Prep Liturgy – November 30th
Newtown Park - December 2nd
Gymnastics – December 3rd
Have a great week,
Liz and Melita
Year 1
Welcome to week 6!
Students have been enjoying learning and researching about Penguins using non-fiction texts. This week, we have been busy working through the writing process: first draft, editing on their own, conferencing with their teacher and then a good copy, to compose an information report on these fascinating creatures.
In Maths, we are trying to consolidate counting strategies: double facts, rainbow facts count on 1,2,3, count backs 1,2,3. It is so important that students are confident with these, so playing a quick maths game on the way to school would help consolidate their learning.
Students have enjoyed recalling memories from the past. These significant events have been sequenced together and put on their timeline. Students have worked together to find significant events in Mary’s life in the bible and have also sequenced these on her timeline.
Our end of year liturgy is still being finalised. A date will be emailed to families this week.
Jen and Ange
Year 2
This week we are starting our assessment for each of the learning areas. We are fast becoming experts at persuasive writing using our OREO paragraphs and including high modality words. We have discovered that we can be very opinionated about topics such as eating vegetables, homework and bedtime.
In Science we have observed many of our mealworms transform into firstly a pupa and then a beetle. The children have been fascinated by them and have eagerly recorded their observations.
In Maths over the coming weeks we are brushing up on our money skills. Counting money can be tricky so if you would like to reinforce this at home. Maybe you have a jar of coins that the children can sort and count. We will be doing some shopping in class so our budgeting skills will be put to use.
Our excursion to the cinema is on Monday the 30th of November. Please return permission notes for this if you haven’t already done so.
By next week we will be well and truly into the Christmas spirit. We will be getting ready for our Christmas Liturgy which will be held on the 27th November at 12 noon. It will be held in the hall and all parents are invited. Students can come to school dressed in either a Christmas shirt or any brightly coloured shirt. They can wear their joggers and a pair of shorts or jeans.
We will be celebrating Christmas in our classes with Secret Santa. We ask that every family bring in a gift valued at around $5.00 for a secret friend. They will be notified of who their secret friend is by this Friday.
Library books are due in by the end of week 7. Last week of borrowing is this week.
Let us know if you have any queries or concerns.
Dennielle, Allyson, Sarah, Aleisha and Megan
Year 3
It’s Week Six, and we have been working fast and furiously on our English PowerPoint presentations. Everyone is trying to “Bump Up” their work – aiming to improve their writing and speaking levels. All classes have worked on their science boxes – testing suitable conduction and insulation materials.
Our Year 3 End of Year prayer celebration is on Wednesday 25th November in the school hall, starting with prayer at 2:15 pm, followed by sharing of our Maths games– invitation notes have been sent out, so please keep an eye out for these and let us know if you didn’t receive one.
Towards the end of the year, we see a lot more restlessness with the children both in the classroom and on the playground. Please remind your children to be a little more patient with their friends (and their teachers!). Water bottles and hats are absolute necessities as the weather heats up and children need to stay hydrated.
Remember to send in gift cards for our St Vincent De Paul Appeal. All library books need to be returned by the end of this week (Week 6). Please also send in your permission forms for our trip to the cinema on Monday 30th November.
Remember to “Be positive, patient and persistent! – Just like the Lourdes Way!” Have a great week!
Angela, Annie, Damian and Janice
Year 4
Hello from Year 4!
Hard to believe that we are already past halfway in the term. Being fourth term too, each class is busily finishing the greater part of assessment. Your child’s attendance during the next few weeks is important. All classes completed their two days at Bike Safety and from all reports many children have fared very well both in a written and practical test. Within the next week, we will be visited by the Bike Safety teacher who will present children with their certificates. A reminder to be aware of the school expectations on uniform; this applies until the end of the term. Details about the upcoming Gala Sports Day will be sent home soon. Children are learning the skills of T-ball in sports lessons. Library borrowing finishes at the end of this week so all overdues should be returned ASAP.
Suzanne, Toni and Garry
Year 5
What a crazy couple of weeks! Last week we had our Year 5 camp; it was a fantastic experience. I’m sure there were some very tired students and definitely five very tired teachers as well. The students had a wonderful time participating in a variety of challenging activities including stand up paddle boarding, body boarding, archery, evasion games, beach and pool activities. We even got to celebrate a birthday and watch the Origin. For some students facing fears like these and overcoming it is a great accomplishment. It is times like this, when students achieve a milestone that makes teaching a rewarding profession. The behaviour and maturity shown at the camp was exceptional and is a great indication of the type of leaders these students will be next year. Thank you to Mrs Salisbury and Ms Murray for attending the camp and assisting the teachers and students.
The final Assembly for the year will be in Week 7 with the presentation of end of year awards.
Swimming Carnival nominations will be sent home soon – please check that they are accurate and return the note to Mrs Salisbury.
Don't forget our St Vincent De Paul hampers. Our hampers will look different this year due to COVID. We are asking families to donate gift cards of any denomination rather than non-perishable items. Please ask students to hand these to class teachers.
We have a few big weeks of school left and although we’re all tired from camp, we need to remember to stay positive and keep putting in one hundred percent effort until the very end.
Tim, Steve and Emily
Year 6
State of Origin
Due to the mighty Queenslanders storming home in the second half to win the match, there will be a reduced amount of set homework for this week.
Book Week
A huge thank you to Mrs Leathart and Mrs Monte for making Book Week so special. Great to see Y6 join in with the swing of things; there were some fantastic costumes.
NAIDOC Week (8-15 November 2020)
Theme: Always Was, Always Will Be.
‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.
NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 with Captain James Cook, or in 1606 with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations people.
NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country – a history that dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000-plus year history of this country - which is Australian history.
STEM Showcase and Sports Rotation
Year 6 has been invited to St Saviour’s to participate in a STEM Showcase and sport rotation this Thursday 12 November 2020. Students need to be at school by 8:25 am, wear their sports uniform and bring Morning Tea, Lunch, a water bottle, and a hat.
Graduation Ceremony
Tuesday 1 December 2020, commencing at 6.30pm (Formal School uniform worn). Due to COVID restrictions, our graduation ceremony, presided over by Fr Quinlan, will be held in the school hall this year. Unfortunately, we have had to restrict numbers, so each student will only be allowed 2 adults in attendance.
School Cross Country
A huge thank you to Mrs Salisbury for a very successful carnival. Well done to Year 6 for their overall effort during the Cross-Country. Congratulations to the place getters and thank you to everyone who helped with the setting-up.
Final Assembly
A reminder that the Year 6 final Assembly will be held on Thursday 19 November 2020 commencing at 2:00 pm.
St Vinnies School Appeal
A reminder that donated items for this appeal needed to be delivered to the office.

In week 6 we are learning about Formen – Shapes, and in week 7 we are learning about senses and actions.

For the last five weeks I have had the opportunity to return to Our Lady of Lourdes while Mrs Tague has been on leave. I have really enjoyed my time in The Hub and the chance to catch up with students, teachers and parents. Lourdes is a happy place to be. The students are kind and caring and always strive to do their best. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for welcoming me back for my short stint and to wish you all a very Merry Christmas as the term flies by to the Christmas holidays. Welcome back Mrs Tague!
Take care and best wishes,
Maria Kehoe

FROM THE GARDEN
Lots of 'thankyous' this week. Thank you to Mrs Sarah Kelly for her kind donation of cornflower and paper daisy seeds, as well as sweetpea seeds for next year. Also to Mrs Mellisa McLean, for her generous donation of 'beneficial insect' seeds, and a beautiful grevellia 'Orange marmalade'. All are currently doing well in the new garden along the oval.
A very big thank you too, to the wonderful council workers, who look after Newtown Park, for finding our old school bell, that was stolen last Monday.

DAY FOR DANIEL
Little Miracles proudly took part in Day for Daniel on Wednesday 28th October and Friday 30th October. We raised awareness by dressing in red, playing games and taking part in activities. A highlight for the children was a special walk for Daniel on Friday morning. Little Miracles children are always engaging in learning experiences that educate children on child protection issues, so this was much of our focus for the week. We also used this as an opportunity for the children to learn about the importance of giving to others, and how they can help the Morcombe foundation.
