Dear Parents & Carers
It has been a very successful year and I am tremendously proud of the children’s efforts throughout the year, both in the classroom and in the various extra-curricula arenas. Our academic results are once again something to be most proud of and from the extensive feedback received, this has been achieved whilst maintaining our strong catholic ethos within a very supportive school community. Upon reflection of recent student achievements and the success of school wide initiatives, it is evidently clear that OLOL offers a very balanced approach to teaching and learning and extra-curricular opportunities.
Every member of our teaching and support staff deserve commendation for the extra-ordinary level of commitment they have put in to ensure the students in their care receive the best possible teaching and guidance. To you, the parents, I extend on behalf of the staff, my sincerest appreciation for your ongoing support and co-operation. Education of young people is a partnership. The continued culture of parent support for our teachers is paramount for ongoing success. Without your assistance, we would not be able to achieve the high standards which currently exist.
The final few weeks of the school year is a crazy time not only in schools but in all aspects of our lives. End of year assessment & reporting, building project, final assemblies, Yr.6 Graduation, excursions, staffing, budgets and planning for the impending holidays and Christmas, swamp us at a time when our energies may be low and many of us feel we are running on empty. At the end of each term, especially Term 4, we are more likely to be sensitive, a little ‘thin skinned’ and emotional because we are run down and in need of that well-earned break. The same thing happens at this time every year. The important thing is how we all, parents, teachers and students, respond to this challenge.
Monitoring our talk and our sensitivity are particularly important at this time of the year. We are far more susceptible to allowing irritations that would not normally have an effect on us, get to us. Our resistance is low and we are vulnerable to both attack from outside and poor decisions within. Now is the time to watch our words, resist the temptation to ‘shoot from the hip’ and make decisions on the run. It is the time when things get us down, to take that deep breath and a moment to reflect on the real importance of the issue at hand. It is when times are tough that reputations are truly made. A harsh or insensitive word to someone can undermine our good work in building relationships throughout the year. It is important to be aware of our moods and on guard that we think before we act.
Remember back to the start of the year; most of us started the year with energy and vigour. We were rejuvenated by the break and were ready to put all of our energies into being as effective as we possibly could.
The old adage ‘beginners are many, finishers are few’ is worth remembering. It is important to finish strong, or as I like to say…we all need to aim to be 80 minute players. Whilst our reserves may be running low, it is vital to remain focused and finish the year well. Our credibility in the eyes of others is based on results and our ability to complete our projects, meet deadlines and follow tasks through to completion. “A brand for a company is like a reputation for a person. You earn reputation by trying to do hard things well.” [Jeff Bezos, Founder and CEO Amazon]
Stephen Covey, the author of the book, “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” talks about when world-class marathon runners ‘hit the wall’ and they feel like they can’t go on, instead of focusing on their exhaustion and how tired they are feeling and going into the ‘survival shuffle’, they lift up their head and pick up the pace. With this in mind, the end of term is near but there is still lots to do. Let’s do them in a spirit of co-operation and as always…let’s do them to the very best of our ability and do them well.
Volunteers Morning Tea
To all our parents, grandparents and friends who give up their time to volunteer at the school, I extend a cordial invitation to you all to join with me at our annual volunteer's morning tea on Tuesday 16th November at 10:00 a.m. This will provide an opportunity to say a big thank you for all that you do. Your efforts as classroom helpers, tuckshop assistants, fundraising organizers, etc. do not go unnoticed and contribute significantly to the ongoing success of the school.
Leadership Speeches
Our Year 5 students who are seeking election for school leadership positions in 2022 will deliver their speeches next Wednesday 17th November in the Church at 9:00 a.m. I certainly wish them all the best in their endeavours.
Prep Orientation
A reminder about the Prep orientation morning on Tuesday 23rd November from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for all students and their families who will be part of our Prep cohort for the 2022 school year. Our current Preps will join with Year One for the morning while our new Prep cohort spend time in the Prep classrooms with our wonderful Prep teachers.
Book Lists
Once all class placements have been finalised, 2022 book lists will be forwarded home. Once again, all required book list items will be available from Browns Bookstore. I certainly urge all families to utilise the service Browns offers. This not only takes the pressure off families having to shop around for various book list requirements but also ensure that all students commence the school year fully prepared from day one. Please note that Prep and Year One families will not be issued with booklists. A levy is included on your first school fee invoice in 2022 and the teachers will orgainse all stationery requirements.
Swimming Carnival
Our annual swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday 1st December at the Glennie Pool for students in Grades 3-6 only. Families have been sent an online form to complete for event nomination and consent to attend the carnival. It is expected that all students compete in at least one event on the day. Please take time to read all relevant information about the swimming carnival. Please note that students need to be dropped off and collected from Glennie and due to the venue’s COVID compliance policy spectators are unfortunately unable to attend the carnival.
Final Assembly
We will be combining our traditional farewell assembly for our fabulous Year 6 students with the end of term Thanksgiving Celebration. This event will be held on Tuesday 30th November at 11:00 a.m at St. Ursula’s College’s Salo Centre in Rome Street. I would like to sincerely thank St. Ursula’s for the use of this amazing facility. On the day, the students will have an early morning tea and walk down in their year level groups to the Salo Centre.
As a result, there will be no Mass on the last day of school. Parents, however, are still most welcome to pick up their children from school at lunchtime on the last day.
School Fees
Term 4’s school fee invoices have been emailed. Please ensure that you are fully up to date with the payment of this year’s school fees by the end of the term. Chasing outstanding fees owed at the end of the year is a very time consuming exercise and places the school at a financial disadvantage when attempting to carry our building and ground maintenance as well as affecting our ability to purchase much needed resources for 2022. Your co-operation and support in the timely payment of fees and levies is always greatly appreciated.
ICAS
A special congratulations to the students who participated in the ICAS Assessments. The following students received a High Distinction, Distinction or a Credit.

For each of our students, teachers have been gathering evidence of learning for each learning area. It is a process of gathering, analysing and reflecting on multiple sources of evidence to make informed judgements about what students know, understand and can do. These judgements help to inform teaching and learning and are used to deliver feedback.
Assessment can either be:
- Diagnostic- assessment of prior learning, e.g. pre-tests and work samples
- Formative- assessment for learning, e.g. observations, exit tickets, checks for understanding, group work, individual conferencing, peer and self-assessment, and ongoing work samples
- Summative- assessment of learning, e.g. tasks, assignments, post- tests, and presentations
Teachers are required to develop assessment literate learners by assisting students to determine their current level of understanding, ensuring they know what they are learning, encouraging them to take on the learning, challenging them to select strategies to assist and deepen their learning, and developing students who monitor their own progress. These are some of the traits of a Lourdes Learner.
As Chris explained in his section of the newsletter last week, reporting is both informal and formal and shows what students, know, understand and can do at a point in time. At the end of this semester, teachers will have gathered and analysed evidence of learning to provide a formal report on where students are at compared to the end of year level achievement standard.
Last week I provided an explanation of the definition of the A-E report card grades. A student who receives a C grade has typically shown their year level achievement and the teacher has sufficient evidence of learning to assign the overall grade for that learning area. An example of the 'C' definition is below:
Evidence of the student's work typically demonstrates that the student has the targeted knowledge and
- expected conceptual understanding
- expected application of skills
- they are able to transfer the above to familiar situations
For further clarification, the following list provides definitions of other key terms you will read in the report card:
Evidence- a range of information that teachers collect including data, work samples, digital media, teacher notes, formal assessment tasks.
Typically- allows for those students who may not have displayed this during a particular assessment task, but it is evident in their work with the frequency required within this grade. There are a range of opportunities provided to demonstrate student learning to obtain the reported grade and is not limited to one test or one assignment.
Conceptual Understanding- a connected web of knowledge, rich in relationships and understanding and must be learned by thoughtful, mental activity
Sophistication- employing advanced or refined concepts
Skills- these are often what students need to be able to do, for example, creating texts, asking questions, re-reading and editing, summarising, counting etc.
Transfer- the ability of a student to take their current knowledge, skills and understandings and apply this into a familiar or new scenario and/or different context; the ability to think
As always, if you would like more information or further clarification, please make a time to see me or your child’s teacher.

Tomorrow our Year 6 Mini Vinnie Leaders will lead a Remembrance Day Prayer at 11 am in the Church for Years 3-6. This week’s 4-6 assembly will follow this prayer. Please note - there won’t be a 2 pm 4-6 assembly tomorrow afternoon.
We are also calling for donations for our Mini Vinnies Christmas Appeal- we are asking for donations of gift cards. Please send in gift cards from grocery stores, toy stores, variety stores and pharmacies. We will send these to our St Vincent De Paul Chapter for distribution amongst the less fortunate in our parish community.
We hope our volunteers enjoy their thank you morning tea next Tuesday morning (16/11) at 10 am. We always value the help the volunteers give to us throughout the year. If you are a volunteer and haven’t yet received an invitation to this morning tea – please check with your class teacher.
There will be lots of prayer celebrations and class activities marking the end of the year – please make sure you keep up to date with the newsletter and class news items.
During the last week of school, we have our final assembly at 11 am on Tuesday 30th November at the Salo Centre, St Ursula’s College. The whole school will be walking down to St Ursula’s to celebrate this assembly – It will be our End of Year celebration combined with the Year 6 Final Assembly. Extended family members are very welcome to attend this assembly.
Then at 6:30pm the Year 6 students will have their Graduation Mass. Our Ceremony will be held in the OLOL Church. Due to Covid number restrictions in the OLOL Church, each student will be allowed 2 guests to attend. The children will be required to wear their formal school uniform for both these ceremonies.
If you can help in any way for the preparation of “After Graduation Gathering”, there is a meeting at 3 pm in the Hall this afternoon (10/11) - otherwise please contact the Year 6 class teachers as soon as possible.
Please remember, due to the space restrictions we will be unable to hold our End of Year Mass on Friday, 3rd December. Finger-crossed, we will be able to have a whole school Mass sometime soon in 2022!
Have a great week!
Cheers

Welcome to Week 4 from The Hive. Last week’s topic was helping children to identify and manage anxiety. For some children social situations are very difficult to manage.
Understanding social anxiety
It’s natural for children to experience anxiety when faced with new or stressful situations. So how do you know when it’s become social anxiety disorder?
It’s common for children to feel nervous or anxious in social situations. With some reassurance and guidance most children learn to cope with these feelings and overcome them.
However, for a child who is experiencing social anxiety disorder, these fears and worries are extreme and persistent.
Some children naturally cope with meeting new people while others find it very difficult, some enjoy being the centre of attention, but other children may find it really uncomfortable, and some children may experience a higher level of discomfort in some social situations and not others.
Children with social anxiety may display the following traits:
Have an intense fear of being judged, criticised, laughed at or humiliated
Are highly self-conscious
Have difficulty forming friendships
Their fears and worries seem out of proportion to what they are facing
It stops them from participating in activities or day-to-day tasks
They have feelings of panic and/or panic attacks
They avoid anything that might trigger their anxiety
Situations that can trigger social anxiety
Every child is different so some situations may trigger social anxiety for certain children and not others. Keeping this in mind, there are some common situations that a child may find distressing if they have social anxiety:
- Giving a talk in front of their class
- Meeting someone new
- Going to a party with people they don’t know
- Asking for a favour or asking for help
- Going to a public place like a shopping centre
- Being the centre of attention
- Talking to someone in authority like a teacher
- Talking on the phone
Anxiety affects the body, mind and behaviour
Physical – Racing heartbeat, muscle tension, sweating, sore stomach, nausea, trembling, feeling faint, shallow breathing.
Psychological – Difficulty concentrating, negative thoughts of being judged by others, mental blanks where they have nothing to say, an urge to get out of the situation.
Behavioural – Avoidance of certain places, not answering the phone, avoiding achievement so as to not stand out.
What might a child with social anxiety be thinking?
The underlying fear causing social anxiety is usually related to a belief that something bad will happen.
For example, a child may think “I might say something stupid, and people will stop liking me”.
Even if a reassuring parent or adult tells them not to worry, the thought or belief won’t go away.
Unhealthy ways of coping with social anxiety
If your child feels they can’t handle fearful social situations they may turn to coping strategies, which can cause longer term harm.
They may do the following:
- Avoid social situations which can make their anxiety worse - this can lead to losing friendships and not learning ways to effectively communicate with others
- Avoid standing up for themselves, giving their opinion or asking for what they want
- Avoid success so they don’t stand out or draw attention to themselves
- They may avoid asserting themselves and go along with what others want them to do to, as they might think it will create conflict
- Older children may ultimately use or misuse alcohol or drugs to help them cope in social situations
What can you do to help?
While it’s difficult to remove anxiety completely, you can help your child learn ways to deal with these thoughts and feelings so it doesn’t stop them enjoying life. Some of the following ideas can help:
- Listen and offer support – take time to understand what they’re going through and reassure them that you care
- Teach them relaxation techniques and ways to calm themselves (eg. deep breathing or progressive muscle relaxation)
- Avoid telling them to ‘calm down’ or ‘relax’ – this can make them feel worse, especially if they feel they have no control over the anxiety
- Try to teach assertive communication - show them it’s okay to give their opinion or ask for what they want (even though they may not get it)
- Support your child to seek help through your local GP, psychologist or counsellor if their social anxiety persists
- Affirm your child’s strengths and their worth - show them that you value their opinion and praise the things they do well
- Monitor your own actions – role model positive coping strategies (eg. relaxation, exercise, deep breathing)
- Help them practice being in social situations - start with easier situations first and work up to more difficult ones
- Do some role plays – help them practice having difficult conversations
- Put any setbacks into perspective – help them to let go of unrealistic or negative thoughts and to not give up if things don’t work out

We certainly have had a lot of fun over the last two weeks with Book Week and our Fairy Tale Banquet. We even had a visit from a giant! Please enjoy perusing the photos of our days.
This week finds our classrooms starting to look a lot like Christmas… We haven’t started playing Michael Buble tunes just yet, but we have started preparation for our Christmas Liturgy to be held on the last day of term at Laurel Bank Park. We will forward more details home at a later date.
It may look like we are starting to wind down for the year, however our classroom routines, learnings and expectations are still at the forefront of everyday. Please ensure your child is at school on time ready to commence by the 8:20 am bell. It is imperative that we continue with our routines to optimise learning and behaviour. Please also remind your children about school rules and this includes walking in and around the school both before and after school and also please be mindful of the other classes that are still working until 3pm.
Today is the last day of library borrowing for the year. All books are due back next week. Children should be reading nightly, both home readers and picture books for enjoyment. Continue to revise sight words and practise writing at home. Make it fun and begin to write out Christmas cards, shopping lists, wish lists or letters to Santa. Some students have a large number of overdue books. Please return them promptly to avoid a bill from the library.
As the weather warms up (and cools down again), it is vital all children have a water bottle, jumper and hat daily.

Year 2
Welcome to Week 6! What a busy time we are having in year 2!
We would like to invite all parents to our end of term celebration, which is a Christmas singalong and picnic in the park. It will be held on the Thursday the 25th of November at Newtown Park. We will depart the school at 11.50am so it would be wonderful if you could meet us at the park at around midday. More details will follow shortly.
As part of our Science and Art assessment, we will be creating a diorama to represent the habitat of a chosen animal life cycle. We are still chasing a few more shoeboxes for this activity, so please bring them in if you haven’t before next week.
In Year 2 we will be celebrating Christmas with a Secret Santa exchange of gifts. We ask that students bring in a gift up to the value of $5.00 by 26th of November. Your child will be given the name of their person this week so that they can start planning their gift. We do ask that no food items be included.
Bunnings will be visiting us once again to create something for Christmas. This will be held on the 23rd of November.
As a special treat for a wonderful year the year 2 students are going to the movies to see Encanto. This will be held on the 1st of December. Please return the permission note for this as soon as possible.

Year 3
Wow – it is hard to believe that we are already over halfway through the term! This week, we are designing, building and testing containers that will keep an ice cube from melting quickly. It will be interesting to see which materials work well as insulators. In English, we have been writing procedures and it has been great to see students applying what they have learned about sentence structure and grammar to their writing. This week is our last week of library borrowing and all student loans are due back no later than next Friday, 19th November. This year, parents and carers may borrow books for their children for the holidays. This will happen in Weeks 8 and 9.
On Tuesday 23rd November, we will have our Year 3 end-of-year prayer in the Church. This will begin at 8:45am and we will then walk to Newtown Park for morning tea. All are welcome to join us.
Our Secret Santa exchange will be held in the last week of school – please have all gifts to school by Monday 29th November. That week, we also have the final assembly at the Salo Centre on Tuesday and the swimming carnival on Wednesday. Please see the rest of the newsletter for further information on these.
We have also asked for students to bring in a plain t-shirt to decorate next week– please let your child’s teacher know if you are unable to send one in.
Have a great week!
Angela, Sarah, Michelle and Janice
Year 4
Welcome to Week 6 - only a few weeks left of Year 4! The last few weeks have been draining with many interruptions and lots of final teaching and assessment. Final teaching and important assessments are continuing to take place over the next few weeks, so it is vital that all students are at school, on time, as much as possible.
We have had a great time learning about the road rules at PCYC with Mick Betros. Who knew that there were so many things that you need to do - quite often with one hand on the handlebars?
It was a fabulous 'sea of red' for Daniel Morcombe Day. It was great to hear Mr Denny speak and remind us how to stay safe when we find ourselves in a dangerous situation. It was very cool to be part of the drone school photo and we realized how unfit we were when we walked around Newtown Park as we 'walked for Daniel'.
Thank you, Mrs Moore, for the beautiful All Saints Mass last Monday. Thank you also to 4L who reverently led the reflection during this Mass.
In the second last week of school, we will be having our final Year 4 Gala Day for the year. Mrs Salisbury has organised a 'soccer' day to be played in a friendly competition against our fellow Catholic schools. Please keep an eye out for the online permission slip.
Speaking of sport, some very enthusiastic Year 4 and 5 students have been staying afterschool for the last few Wednesdays to develop their skills in preparation for interschool sport next year. Mrs Lasserre is very impressed with the hockey participants and their eagerness to learn.
Tomorrow is Remembrance Day, and the Year 6 leaders want to have a special Assembly - it will begin at 10.55am in the Church - not the usual 2pm time.
Finally, as we usually start to think towards Christmas in 45 days (eek), the classes will be discussing the possibility of Secret Santa in their classes. Please look out for any information from individual teachers. We also thought we may have a final Year 4 liturgy and a shared morning tea with parents after the mass on Wednesday 24th November. Further information will be sent home in the next few days.
Suzanne, Toni and Garry
Year 5
It’s hard to believe that we only have a little over three weeks of school left. We certainly cannot let our foot off the gas pedal yet, as we have plenty to keep us busy. Over the next two weeks we will be conducting our end of term assessments. This will leave very little time for catch up. The next two week will consist of:
Religion
With All Saints day occurring last week, we have been exploring Saints and their prayers. We have investigated different saints and will continue to focus on prayer to these saints, different styles of prayer and the rosary.
English
Evaluative Reviews which bring in real world historical contexts. Our assessment task will require students to write a review based on Australian and Turkish perspectives from the book One Minutes Silence. We have been working on this text structure all term and are looking forward to seeing how they tie all their knowledge together.
Maths
Measurement focus, specifically mass, volume and capacity. Lots of practical experience can be had with this concept in the home. Please take the time to discuss this and bring the real-world context to their learning. We continue to explore symmetry with students loving technology and hands on nature of this concept.
Science
We have moved from Light and are exploring the states of matter. Make sure you ask them about the state of matter.
On Wednesday 17th November our leadership speeches will take place. Letters were required to be in to Mr Golightly last Friday. He has been most impressed with the quality of these letters and is looking forward to hearing the quality of speeches next week. An email was sent home about this on Monday.
Leadership shirts are all organised and look very spiffy. A reminder that the cost of these shirts will be added to your school account.
We will be holding an end of year celebration in the final week of school. Further details to come. We are running a Secret Santa this year across the whole Year 5 cohort and gifts are due by Monday week 9 – please let your teacher know if you will have difficulty being involved in this. We ask that this be limited to a $10 gift.
Dates to remember
16th November – Volunteers MT
17th November – Leadership Speeches 8.45am in the Church
19th November – Last round of interschool sport (uniforms to be returned washed the following Monday)
30th November – Whole School and Yr 6 Final Assembly – Salo Centre St. Ursula’s at 11am. (The 2022 school leaders will be announced at this assembly. Parents of students receiving leadership positions will be notified. We respectfully ask that should your child be a recipient that this is kept a surprise until the assembly announcement)
1st December – Swimming Carnival @ Glennie Aquatic Centre (Please see PE section for further details).

Aquathlon success
Congratulations to Addison, Xavier, Zeke, and Sophie who travelled to Dalby on the 29th of October to take part in the Darling Downs Aquathlon trials. The students had to run 1km, then swim 200m and run another 1km. Our Yr. 6 students were outstanding and showed great persistence and determination. Addi placed 2nd, Sophie 5th, Xavier 38th and Zeke 41st overall in their respective races. Addi and Sophie were selected in the Darling Downs Team to contest the State Championships next February in Hervey Bay. Congratulations!

The Carnival is for children in Grades 3-6 ONLY.

However, as they are not of appropriate age, they will not be eligible for age championship points. As with Cross Country and Athletics, there will not be an age championship for these students, nor will records be kept. They will simply be participating in this carnival to provide them with a valuable experience and to gain participation house points.
HOW TO NOMINATE
A Microsoft Form will be emailed to you to collect nominations. You will need to complete one form for each eligible child in Grade 3-6. It is expected that all children in Grades 3-6 nominate themselves for at least one event. Less confident swimmers will be able to use a noodle or kickboard if necessary. In this case it would be best for them to nominate for the 25m Freestyle. All nominations need to be in by Friday 26th November.
A nomination confirmation note will be sent home once all nominations are in. Please make sure you check your child’s nominations carefully; no changes will be made on the day.

POINTS ALLOCATION
25m Events
1 point will be awarded to respective houses for each 25m swim completed. Results from 25m events will not contribute to Age Championship points.
50m, 100m and Individual Medley Events
The following points will be awarded to respective houses and individual age championship tallies following all 50m, 100m and Individual Medley Events:
1st Place – 10 Points (Blue Ribbon), 2nd Place – 6 points (Red Ribbon), 3rd Place – 4 Points (Green Ribbon), 4th Place – 2 Points (Yellow Ribbon) and 5th – 10th Place – 2 Points
Where there is more than one heat, points and ribbons will be awarded to the fastest swimmers overall.
- These points have been changed for 2021.
LEGAL STROKE ACTIONS & DISQUALIFICATIONS
- In 50m and 100m events, except for the 8 years category, students will be judged and disqualified if their stroke does not meet the appropriate standard. As points gained from these events go towards age championship tallies, it is important that only legal stroke actions are awarded.
- 8 years events and all 25m events will not be judged in this way.

Stocktake
All loans for students are due back at the end of Week 7. Round 1 overdue letters were forwarded home last week. Round 2 letters will be sent in Week 8. Please act on these letters as a matter of urgency. All loans that are still outstanding in Week 9 will be charged to school accounts. Before we charge items to school accounts we shelf check the library again to ensure they have not been returned and we will follow up with the borrower also. As you can imagine this can be a rather time-consuming task. Thank you for returning loans promptly.

This week the Garden Crew had the pleasure of presenting to the school a 'Buddy Bench', purchased with the money raised from selling their flowers. This was a huge honour for the boys. The boys are also very busy getting ready for their final plant stall of the year which will be held on Tuesday the 16th of November. Please keep checking the OLOL face book page, for photos of some of the plants and gifts that will be available.
Our 'budding' lunch time gardeners are also starting to enjoy the fruits of their labour, with seeds sprouting, and their veggies flowering. Very exciting.
Thank you so much again for your amazing support.
