Dear Parents & Carers
Children love seeing their parents being involved in their school life. Luckily, there are quite a few upcoming events where you will be able to demonstrate this for your child. Next week will be our first ever Loving the Arts at Lourdes. You’re invited to our Twilight Art Exhibition on Tuesday evening, 22 Aug from 5pm, with all students exhibiting art works. The evening will also consist of performances from various students and our own Music Teacher, Mrs Rosier. Additionally, Mrs Verdon’s husband, Des Verdon, an exceptional local artist and Art Teacher, will paint the portrait of our very own P&F President, Ross Haylock on the night. Check your email for an RSVP link that was sent home on Monday – this will help with catering. Free entry, nibbles provided, and drinks available to purchase.
Next Wednesday 23 August, Loving the Arts at Lourdes continues with Prep – Year 3 performing in the morning from 9 am and Year 4- 6 performing from 11:30. We would love to see you there if you can make it.
Don’t forget in Week 8 of this term, we have our annual Fathers’ Day Mass on Thursday 31 Aug and Chris Golightly’s farewell on Friday 8 Sept. Lourdes thrives when there are events and activities that bring people together and they certainly strengthen the fabric of our community. We look forward to you joining us.
Next week will also be Book Week. To foster parental engagement with learning, more than any other week, you are encouraged to read with your child for enjoyment. Your child would love reading a book or two with you at home, even listening to an Audio book on the way to school. The theme for Book Week is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’ and our wonderful Teacher Librarian and Library Aide have organised fun activities for the children to partake in at lunch times – all to inspire a love of reading.
Building Project
We are so close to gaining certification to enter new classrooms in Giabal building, including the Tuck Shop. I think most parents are only concerned about Tuck Shop opening! Not only do we have a revamped Tuck Shop, we have contemporary indoor and outdoor learning spaces, additional toilet facilities, new outdoor play areas, and verandas that connect all buildings together. These new spaces are wonderful for our community.
However, it would be remiss of me to not thank all our staff, students and parents who have had to overcome many disruptions and inconveniences during the project. These have included early start times for our younger years, new drop-off and pick-up times for families, noisy building works next to learning spaces, teachers having to move classrooms many times, delayed time frames, and less play spaces.
With patience and ongoing support of each other, we are nearing the end and I sincerely thank you all for your patience, cooperation, and support. It is tremendously appreciated. The end product is amazing and not only do we benefit from our hard work, it as a tremendous investment for future generations.
A big thank you to those parents who came to assist us with the Working Bee last Saturday. Many hands make light work!
Communication
As it is in any organization, please keep in mind that problems arise from time to time. A school community is a complex body involving the parish, the Catholic Schools Office, school administration, teachers and support staff, visiting specialists, parent groups, and students. As educators of children, we have the interests of the child at heart. We understand the concerns of parents and we ask that parents in return understand that the roles of the teacher continue to become more demanding and complex.
The education of our students is a partnership. When an issue arises, please contact the person concerned directly at the earliest opportunity and in the least formal way, i.e. a quick chat before or after school, courteous email or phone call at a reasonable time of day.
An important point to remember is to keep an open mind about what you hear. We love and cherish our children; however, it is wise to remember that they can sometimes embellish the story and only tell one side. Checking ‘stories’ with your child’s teacher in a courteous manner will resolve any such problems, as they are the ones that will know different perspectives, other details and facts, and can give a clear explanation of all sides of the story.
Please refrain from going to each other on social media to deal with problems between your children. Make time to speak directly to the teacher or someone on leadership. We will do our best to hear your concerns and deal with them in the most appropriate manner.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Speaking of communication, depending on teacher availability, Parent Teacher Interviews will occur in Weeks 9 & 10 of Term 3 and/ or in Week 1 of Term 4 this term. These will be managed through the Parent Portal for all classes. These interviews are vital to maintain clear communication about your child’s learning progress and provide a great opportunity for teachers and parents to clarify understandings around learning and assessment, as well as effort, attitude, and behaviour in class and around school. Teachers will be able to provide next learning steps and provide suggestions to support learning at home. Parents can share concerns or advice they think the teacher should be aware of.
You will be able to book a convenient time to meet with your child’s teacher from next Monday 21 August. You are welcome to drop into the office to see Carla who will be able to assist with the booking process or you can send an email to lourdes@twb.catholic.edu.au to ask for assistance.
Summer Uniform
Officially, Monday Week 9 is the changeover date to the summer uniform. Due to swimming lessons that week for Prep - Yr 3, these students are permitted to wear their sports uniform each day to make getting changed a lot easier.
Have a great week.

Faith & Religious Education News
Last Tuesday the Prep to Year 3 students shared a prayer to remember Saint Mary Mackillop – our First Australian Saint. Saint Mary Mackillop was someone who valued education so much, that she started schools for poor catholic children to attend. She was supported by women who became the Sisters of St Joseph – Saint Mary and her sisters started schools across Australia and New Zealand. We appreciate her Motto of “Never seeing a need without doing something about it”. Just like we, at Our Lady of Lourdes are CALLed To Think like Learners and Global Citizens – Mary thought what she could do and did it! Our Catholic Schools in Australia are a testament to people like Saint Mary Mackillop, who paved the way for the opportunity for us to be educated so well.
Yesterday, the Year 4 –6 students shared a Mass with the OLOL Parish celebrating the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary- the Mother of Jesus. This day is one of the Holy Days of Obligation in our Church Year. Mary was a very important role model in the life of Jesus. She nurtured and guided Jesus to become the wonderful man we all aspire to be like. The Catholic Church honours Mary the Mother of Jesus with this special day, where we remember Mary’s contribution to the life of Jesus by attending a Mass.
Both these days are called Feast Days – What is a feast day? Why do we celebrate them?
According to the Catholic church, a feast day is the day a particular saint is remembered and celebrated. The church has a calendar that reflects all saints' days throughout the year. It is usually an annual religious celebration where prayers and readings are said to remember a particular saint. Mostly a feast day is on the day of the saint's death as it is believed that this is the day they entered heaven. Mary MacKillop's day is the 8th of August - the day she died in North Sydney in 1909. Whereas the “Assumption of Mary – the Mother of Jesus” is celebrated on the 15th of August because Pope Pius XII declared this to be a special day to honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
Our annual Fathers Day Mass is on Thursday 31st August, 2023 at 10.00am in the school hall. All are welcome.
We are planning a sausage sizzle for the children of OLOL and their Father/Grandad/Poppy/Pa after Mass. We will need some helpers to cook the sausages, and some servers to hand the sausages out. Cooking will start at 8:30 am. If you can lend a hand, please let Janice know. All sausages will be gluten free.
Please fill in the RSVP “Fathers Day Sausage Sizzle forms” we have sent to families – so we can gauge the approx. number of sausages and bread slices we need to purchase as well as the number of chairs we need to put out.
Please send in your photo of your Dad/Grandad/Poppy/Pa for the PowerPoint reflection by next Wednesday 23rd August. (N.B One photo per family)
N.B. There is no assembly on Thursday 31st August, 2023 due to Fathers Day Mass and there is a Pupil Free Day on Friday 1st September, 2023.
The final preparation morning for the 2023 Reconciliation Preparation is on Sunday 27th August at 10:30 am. The Sacrament of 1st Reconciliation is on Tuesday 5th September at 7.00pm. The children will have a practise of the ceremony during school time. We will have short final meeting at 3:30 pm in the church on Monday, 4th September to check seating and final questions. Candidates and their guests are asked to be at the church on the 5th by 6:40 pm. Any questions or queries please contact the OLOL Parish office. (07 4634 1453 Monday – Friday 9.00am – 1.00pm) or email olol.parish@bigpond.com
We have our Crazy Sock Day on Thursday 14th September. Wear your craziest socks, wear your sun safe coloured clothes, suitable footwear, brimmed hat and bring along a gold coin for the Catholic Missions. We are also asking families to donate a new pair of socks with their gold coin – The Gold coin going to Catholic Mission and Socks to The Base Soup Kitchen. Socks can be sent in at any time. Please support both these initiatives to encourage our students to be thoughtful Global Citizens for our local and global communities.
If you have any other RE queries or questions, please contact me on Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au or contact the school office.
Have a great week.

What glorious weather we have been enjoying!
August is our mystery reader month! Lots of fun! You are invited to turn up at a time that suits you and read us your favourite picture book. This is a surprise!! Please don’t tell your child – we simply stop what we’re doing and listen to your story. Please avoid Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons. Thank you to the brave parents who have already had their turn!
Our Cobb & Co excursion was lots of fun – the museum did a great job of moving into a wet weather program. The children all enjoyed the experience and have a better understanding of how our First Nations Australians loved and respected their country. Photos following will give a glimpse of what we did.
Week 7 is our art show and book week. Come along and view your child’s artwork on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday enjoy a song and dance commencing at 9am in the hall. Dress up day is Thursday, 24th August – children come dressed as their favourite book character and need to be able to tell their class about the book.
Dates to think about – week 8 is Father’s Day celebrations, week 9 is swimming week, parent interviews are 9th September.
Cheers,
Melita, Liz and Loretta

Year 1
It’s hard to believe we are halfway through the term already! Everyone is looking forward to settling into our amazing new classrooms, and being the best Lourdes Learners we can to finish the term off strong.
Last Thursday, the Year 1’s had an amazing day at the Darling Downs Zoo. A very big thank you to all the parent and grandparent helpers. We were blessed with perfect weather for our day out and the children were very well behaved. We were able to view many animal species in their enclosures and observe how the various habitats are able to meet their specific needs. In Science, the children will apply this knowledge to create a diorama representing a habitat that meets the needs of a wild animal of their choice.
We are beginning work on our information reports on possums in English. The children are learning how this non-fiction text contrasts with Possum Magic, the narrative we have been reading by Mem Fox. They are learning to research and summarise factual information about possums and organise it under the appropriate headings.
In Maths, we are learning to partition numbers in different ways using manipulatives. We can also apply this knowledge to represent an amount of money using different combinations of coins.
We are looking forward to our Loving The Arts at Lourdes showcase in week 7. On Tuesday evening, 22nd August, there will be Artwork from all students on display and some students have been selected to perform a poem. All Year 1’s will then perform in the concert on Wednesday 23rd August at 9am in the hall. Please come along to support these events if you can.
Week 7 is also Book Week, so now is the time for children to start thinking about their favourite book characters and prepare costumes. The children will participate in the Readers Cup and Book Week Dress Up Parade on Thursday 24th August.
Parent-teacher interviews are also fast approaching. These will be held in weeks 9 and 10 of this term and week 1 of next term, depending on teacher availability. Booking times will be available through the Parent Portal from next week. This is a valuable opportunity to review your child’s progress and address any concerns.
Remember to send in your photos for Fathers’ Day Mass by Wednesday, 23rd August. Fathers' Day Mass is on Thursday 31st August at 10 am.
Thanks for reading!
Jen, Dennielle and Laura

Year 2
Welcome to Week 6! It is hard to believe we are already over halfway through the term!
What a wonderful outing we all had at Peacehaven Park and The Crow’s Nest Historical Museum last week. Thank you to all the parents who came along and helped us to have a fantastic day. It was fascinating to explore how so many things have changed over time.
In Maths this week, we are continuing to learn about multiplication by exploring arrays. Students have finished creating their interview presentation in English and will present to their peers this week. We are beginning a new Science unit, in which students are exploring how materials can change.
Next week, we celebrate Book Week, with many fun activities happening during the week, including dress-up day and Readers’ Cup on Thursday. Mrs Leathart has also organised some great activities during the week.
We look forward to seeing you at the Loving the Arts at Lourdes next week – the Twilight Art Exhibition and performances will be held on Tuesday evening, then all Prep-Year 3 students will perform on Wednesday morning from 9am. Please refer to the information that was emailed home last week.
Don’t forget to send in photos for the Father’s Day Mass to Mrs Moore by next Wednesday, 23rd August (one photo per family).
Have a great week.

Year 4
Welcome to week 6! Isn’t this term flying by? We are getting closer every day to moving into our new classrooms. It has been a long time, but we are sure that it will be worth the wait.
Congratulations to the following students that went to the West Zone Athletics Carnival last Tuesday – Hayley H, Bethany C, Jose, Matthew D, Millie B, Hudson B and Charlotte W. We are so proud of you all!
Most children have been working hard in completing all set work. Regular practice of tables and spelling over the week is the optimum way to remember. We have been learning about different countries in HASS and we will be writing an Information Report that compares and contrasts different countries, for our English assessment. In maths, we have been working on measurement facts and how to measure different lengths, mass and temperatures.
We would again like to remind parents about the importance of homework and that completion of homework at our school is part of the agreement that is signed when students are initially enrolled. We would appreciate your support and encouragement of all children to regularly complete all of their homework. If your child doesn’t understand what they are required to do in their homework, please see your class teacher BEFORE the homework is due.
The Assumption of Mary Feast Day was on Tuesday. Thank you to Mrs Moore for her organization in making this such a special day! We celebrate our annual Fathers’ Day Mass on Thursday 31st August at 10 am in the OLOL school hall. All Dads, Granddads, Pas and Poppys are warmly invited to attend. Please email a photo of your Dad/Granddad/Poppy/Pa with their children/grandchildren, for our Fathers’ Day powerpoint, to Mrs Moore (Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au ) one photo per family, by Wednesday 24/8/2022.
Our Crazy Sock Day is on Thursday 14th September – wear your craziest socks with your sunsafe coloured clothes and bring in a gold coin donation for Catholic Mission – a group that helps communities all over Australia and poorer areas of our world. Catholic Mission aims to empower people to help in their communities by providing education and opportunities to improve the living standards.
We are also asking for a new pair of socks – any size, which we can donate to the Base Soup Kitchen- a way to help those who are struggling in our own local community. We are endeavouring to remind our students that a Global Citizen helps those locally as well as globally.
Next week is a busy week with Book Week and Loving the Arts at Lourdes.
Book Week Dress Up day will happen on Thursday 24th August 2023. Some reminders about choosing costumes for Book Week…
- Keep it simple. Homemade costumes are awesome but so is a store-bought costume or one you’ve borrowed from the neighbours and the one in dress up box already will work too.
- Plan early.
- Working backwards is OK – if you get stuck on a book to match your costume drop by the Library or send Mrs Leathart and email and I am sure we can find a book to match.
- Group costumes can be fun too. Think: Where is green sheep? The Day the Crayons Quit.
- No costume is wrong – movie characters, book related (school appropriate) t-shirt.
- Cannot think of a book? Perhaps your child could come as an author? They wear regular, everyday clothes.
- Pinterest is also a good source of ideas for Book Week.
- The theme this year is: READ GROW INSPIRE
Finally, next week is also our inaugural Loving the Art a Lourdes. We would love family and friends to come and see the talented Year 4 students’ artistic skills on display.

Year 5
We are officially in the second half of the term and, as always, there is a lot happening around the school over the next 5 weeks. Mrs McKay has returned from her long service leave with many stories to share about Far North Queensland, the history of settlement in the 1800s, and of course her croc sightings. Remember that sports uniform days are Wednesday and Friday. All other days, students should be in the correct formal uniform.

Curriculum
As you are aware, in Year 5 and 6 students have access to what they are learning through the CANVAS platform. This learning system allows students to access content at school and home. If they are having difficulties in certain areas, they can go back and review concepts. For Maths, students also have access to Maths Online, which provides step by step videos and downloadable PDF’s to assist in developing knowledge and skills. It also has games to develop speed skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers. By Year 4 students have been taught all multiplication tables, however, it is only through repeated practise that these become automatic and permanent. Developing these skills, and strategies that support recall, are important across many mathematical concepts.

On Thursday the 24th August all students are invited to come dressed as their favourite book character. On this day, students will also engage in a Readers Cup, where they will answer questions about two book titles selected by Mrs Leathart. This is always a fun-filled day and we love seeing the students dressed up. To make it even more fun, 5M will be completing the prayer assembly in the afternoon. Assembly begins at 2pm.
Camp
On Tuesday afternoon we held a camp meeting that provided parents with information about camp. Camp permission forms have been electronically sent. Parents/guardians are required to complete these electronically. If you have an difficulties or questions, please contact one of the Year 5 teachers who will be able to assist you.
Jersey’s from Catholic Schools Carnival
A reminder that your child may have a jersey that needs returning from Catholic School Touch or Netball. Some students will be keeping their uniform as it is used for Friday sport. If your child does not need their jersey from Friday sport, can you please return ASAP to ensure they are not lost.
Jess, Emily and Amy
Year 6
We are now over halfway through Term 3. Last week the students completed several assessment tasks. They wrote a persuasive text with an introduction and two lawyer paragraphs. Some of the vocabulary and modal language features used were outstanding and compelled the audience towards their opinion. In Science, students completed their first written assessment on the positive and negative impacts of renewable and nonrenewable energy. In Mathematics, the students focused on different graphs including their shape, range and mode.
Last Tuesday several students from Year 6 competed in a Mathematics competition. The students were split into 3 teams of four students, two of which were successful in progressing to the next round. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the competition and a huge thank you to Mrs. McKenzie for coaching and accompanying the students.
