Dear Families,
The school has been abuzz this past fortnight with engaged students in both their learning and extra activities. We also had a review team for our school review from Toowoomba Catholic Schools visit us last week. We will receive a school report at the end of this term, but the initial feedback from our review was exceptionally positive. Some particular affirmations included the positive community that exists here at Lourdes, the well managed building project, our excellent teaching teams, the sport opportunities we provide and our liturgies. I would like to particularly thank parents and community members, who gave of their time, to provide feedback to our team. When we receive the full report, we will discern the information and begin looking at what the next 4 years hold for us.
Athletics Carnival
There is further information in the newsletter regarding the Athletics Carnival. I do want to let you know however, that the carnival for 2024 will be run on one day only- Tuesday May 28. The advertised calendar date of Thursday May 30 is no longer necessary. Thank you for working with us, with this change. I acknowledge parents may schedule work around these dates. We look forward to seeing you all on the 28th!
Winter Uniform
If you are waiting for an order from Hannah’s for the winter uniform, please contact your class teacher to make them aware. We are also aware of this issue. In the interim, any students waiting for uniforms are asked to wear their summer uniform.
Mother’s Day
This Sunday, we celebrate the wonderful mothers in our school community. We are reminded of the importance of our mothers by Pope Francis, who said, “A society without mothers would be a dehumanized society, for mothers are always, even in the worse moments, witnesses of tenderness, dedication, and moral strength. Happy Mother’s Day to you all.
Take care,
Bridget

Student Engagement
Earlier this year, several schools from across the diocese engaged the services of Sue Chandler from Transformative Schools. The purpose behind engaging this consultant was to focus on student and staff wellbeing, and strategies that bring about meaningful change to support students in teaching and learning, behaviour and social and emotional wellbeing. For us at Lourdes, our work with Sue Chandler will have multiple layers that will continue to develop over the year.
This week Sue Chandler will work with all Year levels and a consultative group. With classroom teachers, Sue will demonstrate the role of Circle Time. When students regularly meet in circles, they build a sense of belonging with that group and thus create a stronger sense of community. It is an opportunity to teach our young people how to live and work in a community that fosters care, respect and accountability. We all know that relationships matter – a lot! Through this process, connections with teachers and peers help our students cultivate their abilities to shape their own lives, build resilience and thrive.
In conjunction to Circle Time, Sue will also be working with a consultative group on the development of our Student Engagement Framework. This will delve into our school wide policy and procedures and will yield the further development of tiered approaches to students' engagement in teaching and learning, behaviour and social and emotional wellbeing. This will be our ongoing work, and we look forward to sharing more about this in the future.

On Wednesday of Week 2 our Year 5’s presented a beautiful Anzac Commemoration. Please enjoy some of the pictures from this prayer.
Then on Anzac Day our School Captains Hallie and Rylan laid a wreath on behalf of Our Lady of Lourdes at the 9:00 am Community Wreath laying ceremony at the Mothers Memorial.
The Year 2’s had a meditation retreat prayer at Newtown Park on Friday 26/4/2024. The children worked together in groups of four to create some wonderful nature mandalas using only what they could find on the ground. They were very aware that they were stewards of creation – taking care to only leave their footprints in the park where they were creating. Please enjoy the photos of the mandalas we created.
The Year 1’s experienced a meditation prayer retreat on Tuesday at Newtown Park. The sun shone brightly, and we did experience some brisk Autumn weather, but all had a lovely time playing amongst the Autumn leaves and making some Autumn Leaf pictures for other park goers to see!
We will celebrate our annual OLOL Mother’s Day Mass this Friday at 10:00am in the OLOL School Hall. We have organised a morning tea for our Mothers/Grandmothers after Mass. The children will have their own morning tea to eat with their Mums. We would love to see as many Mums, Grandmas and special people who are like Mothers to us, come and pray with us. We hope all Mums, Grandmas, Nanas and special ladies, who are like Mothers to us, will have lovely day this Sunday. We thank all those who sent in a photo for our Mothers Day powerpoint. - It’s a beauty with lots of photos!!!
Our Confirmation and First Eucharist candidates are soon to receive their sacraments. Confirmation is on Tuesday 21st May at 7:00pm. There will be a short practice for Confirmation on Monday 20th May at 3:30pm in the church.
First Eucharist is at 11 am on Sunday 26th May (short practise on Thursday 23rd May 3:30pm in the church). If you have any questions or concerns please contact the OLOL parish office on 46 341453 or email olol.parish@bigpond.com

On Wednesday 24th July we will be having a special Grandparents Day Assembly led by Year 2 at 9:00 am, followed by activity time in the classrooms, then morning tea at 10:30am. Could families please ask their grandparents to mark this date in their diaries. If families could organise one photo of their grandparents for a photostory powerpoint and email it to Mrs Moore - Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au by 3:00pm Wednesday 17th July. Please note - late photos run the risk of not being included.
If anyone is available to help organise the morning tea on that day – please contact the office.
An RSVP will be requested closer to the date in Term 3.
I will be taking some Long Service Leave from 27/5 to 21/6 - Mrs. Melita Hohn will be Acting APRE in my absence. If you have any RE Questions during that time I know Melita will be happy to answer them.

Prep
The children have settled nicely into Term 2, and we are progressing well into our learning. It has been wonderful to see the children remembering and following our established routines in the classroom and the playground.
Sight Words - We are now moving into Level 2 sight words (orange). Revision of Level 1 sight words must continue at home. Once students have automatic recall of Level 1 sight words, they will move on to the next level.
English – This week we learn letter sounds for Bb and Rr. The letter sounds covered so far are g, o, c, k, e, u, r, b. We continue to use these letter sounds to help with decoding words as our reading and writing skills continue to develop.
Homework – Please continue with homework book page (following the book or the schedule in the parent note sent home at the start of the Term), the reader (4 times per week), and the fluency booklet. We understand that life is busy, and we appreciate your support with homework requirements. Continued consolidation of concepts at home is invaluable to your child’s learning and personal growth. We have a saying in Prep – the more we practise, the better we get!
Readers – A gentle reminder that the readers are shared and need to be kept in your child’s satchel. A new reader will be sent home at the end of each week to read over the weekend and the following week.
HASS/ Science/ Religion - ANZAC Day was a great opportunity to teach the children the difference between celebration and commemoration, which is part of our HASS unit. We are investigating what things are made of in Science and are learning about baptism in Religion.
Mothers’ Day Celebration - We are looking forward to celebrating the special women in our lives at the Mothers’ Day Mass on Friday in the hall, commencing at 10 am. We then hope that you can join us for an hour of pampering and love from 11 am to noon in your child’s Prep classroom.
Melita, Amy and Becky
Year 1
Welcome to Week 4! The weather is certainly turning wintery, so please make sure your child has their jumper with them every day. Your assistance with having items clearly named is appreciated.
On Tuesday, we participated in a special Year 1 Retreat with Mrs Moore, at Newtown Park. Mrs Moore led us through a guided meditation, with us imagining that we were autumn leaves blowing in the wind. It was very gusty at Newtown Park, so it was very easy to imagine ourselves as little leaves being blown around! After our prayer experience, we spent time creating an artwork using only items collected from nature - leaves, flower petals, seed pods and more. Our plans for a picnic lunch and a play on the playground were foiled by an autumn shower, but we enjoyed the experience, nonetheless.
This week we give thanks for our mothers and celebrate Mother’s Day with our annual Mother’s Day Mass and Morning Tea, starting in the Hall at 10 am on Friday 10th May. We would love to have you join us! The P&F is holding a Mother’s Day stall on Thursday 9th May, with all items for sale for $5. If you wish for your child to purchase on Thursday, please send money in a named envelope or zip-seal bag on the day.
In English this week, we have been introduced to our next Dreamtime story, ‘The Echidna and the Shade Tree’. Last week, the children did amazing work writing a retell of "How the Birds got their Colours". They were able to tell the story in their own words, describing the character, the setting and the main events from the beginning, middle and end.
As part of our Science unit, we are noticing the changes that take place in the world around us. We have been observing and discussing changes in the sky, noting how the sun appears to move across the sky. Next, we will investigate the changes in weather.
In Maths, we have been exploring patterns. We have practised identifying the repeating element in simple patterns and using objects to make our own repeating patterns. Students will now take what they know about patterns with shapes and objects to help them understand patterns with numbers.
Keep up the great effort at home with reading and homework. We can see great progress taking place!
Have a great week!
Laura, Jenny and Dennielle
Year 2
Welcome to Week 4! What an enjoyable week of learning we are having in Year 2! As part of our Science unit - learning about patterns in our sky, including the sun, moon, and stars, planets in the solar system, and where the Earth is in relation to the sun, moon, and stars - we are fortunate to visit the Brisbane Planetarium this Thursday.
In English, we are at the busy end of our first unit of work. For the next fortnight, students will work through the writing process, to produce an information report on their chosen animal. They will need to include descriptive and comparative language about their animal’s classification, habitat, appearance, diet, and an interesting fact.
Maths has been fun, with students learning to recognise fractions: halves, quarters, and eighth. Students have enjoyed the hands-on experiences of repeated halving.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our wonderful Mums, for this Sunday (10th May). Please join us, as we celebrate you all at our Mother’s Day Mass and Morning Tea this Friday (12th May).

Year 3
Welcome to Week 4! We have been busy getting stuck into our units of learning.
Religion: Last week we explored who the members of our Parish are and important symbols inside our Church. Mrs Moore took us on a guided tour to help us locate and explain the different religious symbols and objects found in the church. We were also very privileged to have Mrs McLean come in and speak to us about her role within the Parish. The students were very respectful and showed particular interest in her various jobs within our OLOL Parish.
HASS: In HASS, we have begun our research on Australia’s Neighbours starting with New Zealand. We have been identifying natural, managed, and constructed features of New Zealand and comparing them to Australia’s features. We learnt lots of exciting new facts and enjoyed exploring this country. Enjoy some our facts:
- There are more people living in Syndey than in all of New Zealand.
- The sheep population is 7 times the human population.
- The South Island is dominated by the southern alps.
ICT: Technology has sparked a lot of interest this term with Mrs Leathart who is teaching the students how to block code, repeat, and loops. Last week, they put these skills to the test to create a mini-online game.
Athletics Training: We are very grateful to Mr Dugdale and Mrs Coren for running our Athletics Training last Friday. Students participated in Discus, High Jump, and Long Jump training. They showed great perseverance during these activities. See attached photos.

Year 4
Welcome to Week 4! We hope that your families have settled back into the school routine, despite the many public holiday interruptions. We are back to full school weeks and working hard to complete all Term 2 learning before preparing Semester 1 report cards.
We have been remiss to not publicly welcome Ms Ashleigh Crawford, our School Officer, back into Year 4, returning after the birth of her TWO beautiful baby girls. We look forward to working with you.
Last Friday, we started athletics training. Year 4 practiced High Jump, Long Jump and Discus. Please note that some students haven’t completed their Discus permission slips (they would have been emailed to the relevant families) and therefore are unable to participate in these events. We will have another athletics rotation morning next Friday in Week 5. This is all in preparation for our Athletics Carnival – which will be held on Tuesday 28th May. Please see Mrs Wigan’s notes in this newsletter, about the change to the one-day Athletics Carnival this year.
All Year 4 classes have had the opportunity to work with Miss Gilbert – allowing her to hear ‘Students Voice’ on various issues. Today 4V were selected to work with Mrs Chandler, a school consultant, on how to use Circle Time in the classroom. All Year 4 teachers were involved, and we look forward to incorporating these new ideas into our classroom routines.
Don’t forget that tomorrow, Thursday, we have Book Fair starting in the library. Mrs Leathart has also organized a special author visit next Wednesday – how exciting!
The Mother’s Day Stall will also be operating tomorrow – all students will be allowed to purchase one gift for $5 from the stall (all gifts cost $5). We are very grateful to the P&F for organizing this special event.
On Friday we will celebrate Mother’s Day with a special mass in the Hall at 10am. Everyone is welcome to join us for this special occasion. Again, the P&F will be in action – kindly providing a free sausage sizzle for all members of the school community.
It is lovely to see all students looking so smart in their winter inform, please make sure all students belongings are named as to ensure students don’t lose their uniform items. Winter uniforms are not optional and must be worn, even if we have unseasonal hot weather. Don’t forget the school photos will be taken on Monday 20th May.
Please note that from next Monday – the oval across the road will not be open for play before school.
We also wish all students undertaking their Sacraments this year – all the very best. Confirmation will be held on Tuesday, 21st May (before our next newsletter). Congratulations on this big commitment Alejandra, Angus, Archer, Ardelia, Aria T, Audrina, Bronte, Cassidy, Evelyn E, Evelyn C, Evie, Imogen, Isaac, Katelyn, Layla, Lily, Mia, Max, Rory and Tomas. We are very proud of you!

English - Currently in English we have been focusing on persuasive writing. Students are utilising the lawyer paragraph (P.R.E.S) to structure the body of a persuasive text. It is encouraged that they do some background reading and fact finding at home on their selected topic. Another focus area has been on different types of sentences, so we can have a variety and make our writing interesting. Our focus sentence types include ‘Explore the Subject’ and ‘Red, White and Blue’.
Maths - In Maths, we are working on reading, writing, and comparing decimals.
HASS – Over the remainder of the term, students will examine colonial Australia in the 1800s, including the expansion of the British colonies and why they developed. They will develop and understanding of who the migrants were and what motivated them to move them to Australian Colonies. Student will be practicing their research skills by locating and collecting relevant information from primary and secondary sources and presenting their findings.
Religion- In Religion we are exploring The Worlds of the Text, which enables us to make sense of our focus scripture of Pentecost. Students have been exploring the cultural, historical and geographical aspects of the where the story of Pentecost has taken place, so we can understand the characters and context of the text. Our next phase of learning will be making personal connections and understanding the relevance and message of this scripture passage.
Buddies - The Year 5s continue to meet up with their Prep buddies each Friday before morning tea. It’s a highlight of the week for the students. The Year 5s love helping their Prep buddies to read books, write letters and numbers, draw, and practise their sight words.
Congratulations - We would like to congratulate our Cross Country runners who participated in the West Zone carnival the other week. Special congratulations to Millicent Budden (1st), Haley Harch (2nd), Bethany Connolly and Hudson Blackburn (3rd).

Year 6
Last of the long weekends – what a treat it has been to ease back into the term with only four days for the past couple of weeks!
“Boy Overboard” by Morris Gleitzman has proven to be a great hit in the Yr. 6 classrooms – our students are entertained and enthralled by the adventures of Jamal and Bibi! Students have been reminded to take home their own copies after periods of absenteeism to catch up. We’ve completed our first two units of Mathematics on timetables and multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. Our unit for the next fortnight will focus on operations – multiplication and division – with and without decimals. We’ve been learning about the Prophets over the past week during Religion lessons. This week students will complete an in-depth study on the Call of Samuel. The White Australia Policy has been a focus during HASS lessons We’re all very much looking forward to specialist lessons next week - art with Mrs Simmons, PE with Mr Dugdale, STEM with Mrs Dolley.
Mother’s Day Mass: We wish our beautiful Mums, grandmas, aunties and mother figures a happy Mother’s Day for this weekend. A whole school Mass will be held in the Hall this Friday 10th at 10.00am, followed by a morning tea. All welcome to join us for this special celebration.
Serviam Leadership Opportunities: Our Yr. 6 students are to be commended on their commitment to serving our school community through organising lunch time activities and helping out our junior years’ classes with morning fitness. Students have volunteered their time to assist with homework club, reading to younger students, teaching younger students to skip during lunch breaks, refereeing soccer games as well as providing a Just Dance session in the hall on Monday lunch times. Well done.
Chess Success: Congratulations to Josephine, Jake, Joey, Oscar, Walter, Emilyn and Alex who all attended the Chess competition during Week 2 of this term with Mrs Leathart. Students enjoyed competing against students from a variety of Darling Downs schools.
Athletics Training: Preparation for our athletics carnivals began with earnest with a session of throws and jumps training last Friday with Mr Dugdale and class teachers at school and at Newtown Park. Sessions will continue for the next two weeks.
Timetables and Assessment Planners: All students should now have a copy of this term’s timetable and assessment planner – great resources to assist in organisation and again, in the case of absenteeism, these can be referred to, when completing work from home via Canvas – accessed through Teams.
Sporting Success: Congratulations to the following students who have been selected in regional Teams:
West Zone Cross Country: Odin, Delilah, Abby, Indy-Rose, Nate, Peter (shadow)
Darling Downs Hockey: Armani
Mathematics Team Challenge: Congratulations to the two teams of Year 6 students who competed in the Darling Downs Mathematics Challenge at the Salo Centre on Tuesday. Our mathematicians represented our school with pride. Lourdes secured 3rd place, an outstanding achievement!
Homework: Homework continues each week – spelling and relevant written activities, reading, Reading Eggs and Maths Online. If students are still working towards recall of number facts (times tables), they are encouraged to use programs such as Hit the Button or Maths Online for extra practice. Homework is due each Friday.
Class Supplies: Please replenish supplies as needed. Many Year 6 students are already running low on pencils, red pens and whiteboard markers.
Library: Yr.6 students will borrow from the library each Tuesday. Remember, kids who read succeed!
Assessment Calendar:

Changes to the 2024 Schedule of Events
There are a number of changes to the schedule of events for 2024. These changes have come about because of a number of factors and considerations we have had to make. These changes are largely a result of the incredible growth of the school and a desire to offer fair and equitable opportunities to all. We understand that not everyone will be in favour of the changes, but we ask you to respect our decisions. Many of these changes were simply unavoidable.

Points Allocation - Individual Age-Championship & House Points
The following points will be awarded to individual athletes and their respective houses according to the overall places that they obtain in each event. Heats will be run for all track events (in the 9-12 year’s category), except for the 800m. One participation point will go towards each students’ individual and house tally following these heats. Subsequently, finals will then take place to award the major individual age championship points and house points, as below. These points will also be awarded to all 9-12 year old’s for field events.
1st Place – 10 points (Blue Ribbon), 2nd Place – 6 points (Red Ribbon), 3rd Place – 4 Points (Green Ribbon), 4th Place – 2 Points (Yellow Ribbon) and 1 Point - 5th place onwards.
Championship & Participation Field Events
In 2024 we will be trialling a different format for our 9-12 years field events. One change is that 8 year olds in Grade 3 will no longer be able to participate in these events. After they complete their running events, they will return to school.
