Dear Families,
We are now into the second half of Term 3. Over the next 4 weeks, there are many events/happenings at Lourdes. I look forward to crossing paths with many of you. If we are yet to meet, please do come and introduce yourself. I am slowly getting to know the amazing Lourdes families.
Parent Teacher Interviews – September 3 and 10:
The parent portal will open on August 20, to make a time to meet with your child’s teacher regarding their progress. These interviews as so important to strengthen the link between home and school. It also sends a strong message to your child, that you value their education. This term, these interviews will take place on the 3rd of September and 10th of September. The interviews will be offered in 15-minute time slots. To be respectful of everyone’s time, we ask that you are on time for your interview and finish at the 15-minute mark. If more discussion is required, another meeting time will be organised. Thank you. Interviews for 1T will be held early in Term 4 on the return of Mrs Taylor.
Art Show – Loving the Arts at Lourdes:
The Art Show is shaping up to be a wonderful display of student artwork. We will have also some performances from our choir, Year 5 and Year 6 students. The format will be slightly different this year. In 2023, the art show ran in conjunction with the Toowoomba Catholic Schools Art Fest, where many students had prepared presentations. This year, our Performing Arts teachers have prepared the above children to perform and entertain. The program for the evening is:
5:30 - Art Show Opening
5:40 - Student Performances
Year 5 verse speaking
Year 5 song
Year 6 verse speaking
Year 6 song
Lourdes Choir (Years 3-6)
6:30 pm - Entertainment begins
Browse student artwork
Enjoy live painting by Des Verdon
Photo booth
Art auction
Bar open
Please note that following student performances, students may depart from the Art Show. Students remaining are to be supervised by families. All playground areas will be closed for the duration of the Art Show Event.
P&F- All Welcome:
Our next P&F meeting is Tuesday August 20 at 6:30 pm in the staff room. The committee is seeking greater involvement from our community. Coming with a friend/parent from your child’s class is often a great way to start! It is a welcoming group and I hope to see some new faces next week.
8A Ascot St Purchase:
Communication was sent last week, advising that the school has secured the purchase of the house and land at 8A Ascot Street. This is the block of land adjacent to our current oval. This purchase will allow for the expansion of our green space. Preparations to remove the house are underway. I am excited for our students and look forward to working with students and families, to plan the best use of this area in the future.
Parents On Site During the School Day:
If parents/carers need to drop something to their children during the school day, please come to the office and not directly to classrooms. This enables our teachers to continue to teach their class and maintains a safe environment for our community.

Sports Morning
As part of our Serviam year as leaders, the Year Six students invite all students to attend a sports morning before school on Wednesday 21st August from 8 am to 8:25 am. Activities for fun, fitness, and participation will be held on the oval, backyard, and tennis courts. Students are welcome to wear joggers and change into school shoes for the start of the school day.
Stop Drop and Go
Just a gentle reminder that Stop Drop and Go is for exactly that. If students are not at the pick-up area, cars will be asked to drive around the block to prevent the traffic backing up on already busy roads. Please also be aware that if you need to park and leave your car - it is best to park in adjacent streets, church carpark, or the Tennis Court carpark.
Children should be encouraged to move quickly to Stop Drop and Go on either Ascot St ( Year 4- 6 and siblings) or the Church (Prep - 3). These are the safest places for school pick-up as these places are supervised by teachers on duty. The playgrounds are not supervised after school so asking children to wait there is not a safe option.
If for some reason families are running late -students will be found in the school administration area after 3:30 pm and can be picked up from Ascot Street.
Faith & Religious Education News
St Mary of the Cross Mackillop Prayer
Last Thursday the Prep to Year 3 students shared a prayer to remember Saint Mary Mackillop – our First Australian Saint. Saint Mary Mackillop was someone who valued education so much, that she started schools for poor catholic children to attend. She was supported by women who became the Sisters of St Joseph – Saint Mary and her sisters started schools across Australia and New Zealand. We appreciate her Motto of “Never seeing a need without doing something about it”. Just like we, at Our Lady of Lourdes are CALLed To Think like Learners and Global Citizens – Mary thought what she could do and did it! Our Catholic Schools in Australia are a testament to people like Saint Mary Mackillop, who paved the way for the opportunity for us to be educated so well.
Assumption Mass
Tomorrow, the Year 4 –6 students will share a Mass with the OLOL Parish celebrating the Feast Day of the Assumption of Mary- the Mother of Jesus. This day is one of the Holy Days of Obligation in our Church Year. Mary was a very important role model in the life of Jesus. She nurtured and guided Jesus to become the wonderful role model we all aspire to be like. The Catholic Church honours Mary the Mother of Jesus on this special day, when we remember Mary’s contribution to the life of Jesus by attending a Mass.
Both these days are called Feast Days – What is a feast day? Why do we celebrate them?
According to the Catholic church, a feast day is the day a particular saint is remembered and celebrated. The church has a calendar that reflects all saints' days throughout the year. It is usually an annual religious celebration where prayers and readings are said to remember a particular saint. Mostly a feast day is on the day of the saint's death as it is believed that this is the day they entered heaven. Mary MacKillop's day is the 8th of August - the day she died in North Sydney in 1909. Whereas the “Assumption of Mary – the Mother of Jesus” is celebrated on the 15th of August because Pope Pius XII declared this to be a special day to honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
Sacrament of Reconciliation
The final preparation morning for the 2024 Reconciliation Preparation is on Sunday 25th August at 10:30 am. The Sacrament of 1st Reconciliation is on Tuesday 3rd September at 7.00pm. The children will have a practise of the ceremony during school time. We will have short final meeting at 3:30 pm in the church on Monday, 2nd September to check seating and final questions. Candidates and their guests are asked to be at the church on the 3rd by 6:40 pm. Any questions or queries please contact the OLOL Parish office. (07 4634 1453 Monday – Friday 9.00am – 1.00pm) or email olol.parish@bigpond.com
Year 5R will lead the Week 7 assembly.
Father's Day Mass and Sausage Sizzle
Our annual Father's Day Mass is on Thursday 29th August, 2024 at 10.00am in the school hall. All are welcome. We have planned a sausage sizzle for the children and staff of OLOL and their Father/Grandad/Poppy/Pa after Mass. We will need some helpers to cook the sausages, and some servers to hand the sausages out. Cooking will start at 8:30 am. If you can lend a hand, please let Mrs Moore know. All sausages will be gluten free.
Please fill in the RSVP “Fathers Day Sausage Sizzle forms” we have sent to families – so we can gauge the approx. number of sausages and bread slices we need to purchase as well as the number of chairs we need to put out.
Link to Fathers' Day RSVP Form:
https://forms.office.com/r/pVdVqjCDwC
Please send in your photo of your Dad/Grandad/Poppy/Pa for the PowerPoint reflection by next Wednesday 21st August. (N.B One photo per family) to Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au
N.B. There is no assembly on Thursday 29th August, 2024 due to Fathers Day Mass and there is a Pupil Free Day on Friday 30th September – the children will have a holiday while the staff of Our Lady of Lourdes will attend a Consistency of Teacher Judgement Day.
Crazy Sock Day
We have our Crazy Sock Day on Thursday 12th September. Wear your craziest socks, with your sun-safe coloured clothes, suitable footwear, brimmed hat and bring along a gold coin for the Catholic Missions. We are also asking families to donate a new pair of socks with their gold coin – The Gold coin going to Catholic Mission and Socks to The Base Soup Kitchen. Socks can be sent in at any time. Please support both these initiatives to encourage our students to be thoughtful Global Citizens for our local and global communities.
Our final assembly for the term is on Friday 13th September at 12 noon led by 5MG.
If you have any other RE queries or questions, please contact Mrs Moore on Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au or contact the school office.
Have a great week.

Prep
Welcome to Week 6! It is hard to believe that we are over halfway through Term 3 already. We are continuing to follow regular prep routines and expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed our Cobb & Co excursion gaining a better understanding of how our First Nations Australians loved and respected their country. We have a few exciting things coming up, details follow below.
Book Week Celebrations
Book Week commences Week 7 Monday 19th August (next week). Book Week's Dress Up day is on Thursday 22nd August so it is time to start thinking about your child’s costume. The theme this year is ‘Reading is Magic’. There are a lot of exciting things happening during Book Week, please keep an eye out for Mrs. Leathart’s Library news for more information.
We are still looking for volunteers for Mystery readers. If you are interested, please let your child’s teacher know the day and time you intend to pop in. We just request that you bring your own picture book to come and read a story to the class. Please don’t tell your child, the children will be very excited about our SURPRISE visitors.
As part of our Book Week Celebrations and English unit this term, students are asked to share one of their favourite books with the class. During their presentation, students are to share the title of the book and give a retell of the story. Students should also know the author and the main characters.
At the start of term, a note was sent home with the template to complete and a roster of your child’s allocated presentation day. If you are unsure, please see your child’s teacher. The template provided is to be used as a guide for the presentations, however, students should know their retelling well enough that they do not need to refer to the template. If you need another copy, please let your child’s teacher know to provide you with another copy. Children are encouraged to dress up as a character from their book on their allocated day. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
Homework
Just a reminder that homework is due back every Thursday. This includes the number and fluency booklets, and the homework scrapbook. We strongly encourage your child to practise all sight words each night to consolidate their sight word knowledge and to read their home reader and fluency book each night to develop automaticity and fluency.
Bunnings Visit
We have a Bunnings visit this Friday 16th August. We look forward to making something for Father’s Day.
Father’s Day
A reminder that the Father’s Day Tea and Toast Celebrations will be in the Prep classrooms from 7:45am – 8:25am. Fathers, Grandads, Stepdads or other significant men in your children’s lives are welcome. Following on from this special morning will be a Father’s Day Mass at 10am in the hall. Please see Mrs. Moore’s RE news for information about sharing photos of your children and their fathers for our Father’s Day Mass.

Year 1
Welcome to Week 6! It's hard to believe that we are halfway through the term already. The routines of grade one continue, as the children build fantastic traits for learning. Last week, the children attended a Liturgy in the Church to celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop. We were very proud of the way the children behaved, and they showed great respect and participated well.
We are beginning work on information reports on possums in English. The children are learning how this non-fiction text contrasts with Possum Magic, the narrative we have been reading by Mem Fox. They are learning to research and summarise information about possums and to organise it under appropriate headings. The children will use this to write their own information report on their chosen animal. The children will use AccessIt on their iPads to help them with their research.
The children enjoyed their follow-up visit from our Fire Officers as part of Fire Ed. The Fire Officers explained the components of the fire truck and allowed the children to try out the fire hoses.
Week 7 is Book Week, so now is the time for children to start thinking about their costumes. The theme is "Reading is Magic”. Please read Mrs. Leathart's Library News for more details. It sounds like a week of fun with many lunchtime events at the library.
Thanks for reading.
Laura, Liz and Jenny
Year 2
Wow, it is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the term! The Year 2 students have been busy creating their presentations from their grandparent interviews and have done a great job presenting them to their class.
In Maths, we are continuing to explore mass, multiplication, and place value. Our Science focus is the properties of materials and how they can change through twisting, bending, stretching, and tearing. In Religion, we have celebrated the feast day of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop and continue to learn about covenants and Jewish mitzvahs.
A reminder that Book Week Dress Up is coming up next Thursday, 22nd August – please see the library news for more information around Book Week.
The Father’s Day Mass and sausage sizzle will be held on Thursday 29th August and swimming in Week 9.
Have a great week.

Year 4
Week 6 is upon us, and we have been working splendidly in Year 4!
We have many exciting events coming up:
The Assumption of Mary Feast Day is on Thursday this week. Thank you to Mrs Moore for her organisation in making this such a special Mass!
We celebrate our annual Fathers’ Day Mass on Thursday 29st August at 10 am in the OLOL school hall. All Dads, Grandads, Pas and Poppys are warmly invited to attend. Please email a photo of your Dad/Grandad/Poppy/Pa with their children/grandchildren, for our Fathers’ Day powerpoint, to Mrs Moore (Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au ) one photo per family.
Our Crazy Sock Day is on Thursday 12th September – wear your craziest socks with your sunsafe coloured clothes and bring in a gold coin donation for Catholic Mission – a group that helps communities all over Australia and poorer areas of our world. Catholic Mission aims to empower people to help in their communities by providing education and opportunities to improve living standards.
Next week is a busy week with Book Week.
Book Week Dress Up day will happen on Thursday 22nd August. Some reminders about choosing costumes for Book Week…
- Keep it simple. Homemade costumes are awesome but so is a store-bought costume or one you’ve borrowed from the neighbours and the one in dress up box already will work too.
- Working backwards is OK – if you get stuck on a book to match your costume drop by the Library or send Mrs Leathart an email and I am sure we can find a book to match.
- Group costumes can be fun too. Think: Where is green sheep? The Day the Crayons Quit.
- No costume is wrong – movie characters, book related (school appropriate) t-shirt.
- Cannot think of a book? Perhaps your child could come as an author? They wear regular, everyday clothes.
- Pinterest is also a good source of ideas for Book Week.
- The theme this year is: READING IS MAGIC
Finally, we have our Excursion to Brisbane coming up on Friday 23rd August! Please fill out permission forms on Sentral. Students are welcome to bring a book to read or a notepad and pen to write on during our bus journey. Please ensure that your child has a water bottle, generous lunch and morning tea and a hat.
Have a wonderful week!
Suzanne, Danielle, Jess and Aleisha

Curriculum
As you are aware, in Year 5 and 6 students have access to what they are learning through the CANVAS platform. This learning system allows students to access content at school and home. If they are having difficulties in certain areas, they can go back and review concepts. For Maths, students also have access to Maths Online, which provides step by step videos and downloadable PDFs to assist in developing knowledge and skills. It also has games to develop speed skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of numbers. By Year 4 students have been taught all multiplication tables, however, it is only through repeated practise that these become automatic and permanent. Developing these skills, and strategies that support recall, are important across many mathematical concepts.

With only 3 weeks to go until judging commences for this years Carnival of Flowers, the kids are starting to get very excited. They have been planting veggies and annuals, madly watering, and pruning. It is always so lovely to witness their excitement when they find something flowering or fruiting for the first time
A big thank you again to Pohlman's Nursery for their recent donation of veggie seedlings just in time for the competitions.
If anyone has council rates plant vouchers that they do not want. Garden club will gladly take them.
Jo
(Just loving this little nest the kids made in the garden, very cute).
