Dear Families,
This Thursday we gather as a school community to acknowledge our fathers/significant males in our children’s lives. One of the greatest truths of our catholic faith is that family is the building block in our communities. In Catholic Education, we work in partnership with our families to provide the best possible outcomes for all students. The role of a father is so very important in shaping the minds of our young people. I wish all our father’s a happy Father’s Day and look forward to speaking with many of you this Thursday at 10:00am at our school Liturgy and sausage sizzle.
Afternoon Pick Up:
A reminder that pick up for students in the afternoon is as follows:
- P-3 Stop, drop and go in the parish driveway
- Year 4-6 and their younger siblings on Ascot St.
Many parents also walk on site to collect their children which is wonderful. However, if you are not going to be at school to collect your child/ren by 3 pm they need to wait in one of the above areas. Students should not be waiting unsupervised on the play equipment or on the grass area outside the hall.
Summer Uniform:
We have now begun to transition to the summer uniform. Please ensure that your children are wearing the uniform correctly including the correct coloured shoes. This unexpected warmer weather has taken us all by surprise.
Parent Teacher Interviews:
Over the coming weeks, we look forward to having our families at school to meet with the class teacher to discuss your child’s progress. As a mother of 3 myself, I have attended many interviews for my own children. I share with you some tips below to make the interview and follow up conversation with your child/ren beneficial:
- Look for areas of growth for your child. What can they do now, they couldn’t in term 2?
- If there are areas of improvement recommended, ask the teacher how you can support this at home.
- Reflect with your child on all they have achieved so far this year and speak positively about 1 or 2 ways you can support them to become an even better Lourdes Learner.
I hope to see many of you this Thursday or at the Art Show on September 6- it is shaping up to be a wonderful evening.
Kind regards,
Bridget

Parent Teacher Interviews
On Tuesday 3rd and 10th of September Parent Teacher interviews will be held for most classes. These interviews are an opportunity to connect and discuss your child’s learning journey. These interviews are scheduled for 15 minute sessions. We ask that teachers and parents are respectful of these times to ensure that interviews run to time. If 15 minutes have passed and you still items to discuss, please arrange another mutually agreed time.
To respect the privacy of all, and to minimise interruptions during these interviews, we ask that parents wait in the following locations. Teachers then will be able to welcome you in once previous interviews are completed:
- Prep to Year 4 classes will have chairs placed outside classrooms for parents to sit.
- Year 5 parents please wait in the general learning classroom located between the Art Room and the 5MG classroom. To access, use the stairs outside of the main Admin entry and enter via the upstairs Art room door.
- Year 6C parents chairs will be placed in the undercover eating area.
- Year 6M parents chairs will be placed on the handball courts.
- Year 6S parents chairs will be placed outside the learning hub doors off the handball courts.
- Students in Year 5 & 6 will be notified of these locations and can support you with where to wait should you be unsure.
Fluency
At Lourdes, staff have been working with students on Fluency in Years P-6. With the move to the version 9 curriculum, it has highlighted that practice is the essential component of improving fluency. The more frequently and regularly students practise reading, the more fluent they become.
What is fluency?
Fluency is reading expressively with accuracy and at a good pace. It is one of the key components of learning to read. It is the progression from developing automatic word recognition skills to comprehension. Fluency can be defined as the ability to read text accurately, quickly and with expression. Essentially, it is ‘reading with and for meaning’.
Fluency is made up of three core components:
- Accuracy is the reading of words correctly.
- Rate is the speed of word identification. It is usually recorded as words read per minute.
- Prosody is the sound of the reading. This can be explained as the expression used when reading.
Why is fluency important?
Fluent reading acts as a bridge between automatic word reading and comprehension. It is the link between reading words quickly, and effortlessly, and understanding and comprehending text.
The reader needs to have developed the skills of phonological awareness, phonics and have a good sight word vocabulary to develop into a fluent reader. These foundational skills of word recognition need to be recalled quickly to the point of automatic recall. This automaticity of decoding and recall of words is to become unconscious. This then allows the cognitive space for the reader to access the meaning of the text.
How to teach fluency
Explicit teaching and instruction are required to support children in becoming fluent readers. Types of instruction include modelled fluent reading by the teacher or another fluent reader, repeated reading of texts, paired reading, wide and deep reading across many types of texts. At Lourdes, Teachers offer a wide range of strategies to support fluency development including repeated readings of class texts and poems, performances, singing songs and sharing riddles and jokes.

Emotional Intelligence and Zones of Regulation
There is no denying that people's experience of stress has increased since the covid epidemic. In a fast paced ever changing world, where the cost of living, rapid changes in technology, increase in work demands, and many other stressors impact on our daily lives, the importance of being able to regulate one’s emotions cannot be understated and it's not always easy. However, children look to their parents and teachers in times of stress, change, transition, and as adults we can model healthy ways of coping. We can also promote a healthy school community environment where we model coping strategies in response to triggers. As adults, we also need to model identifying our emotions and choosing a strategy that assists us in being calm, consistent and showing composure.
The state of composure can be defined as ‘the state of feeling of being calm and in control of oneself.” This does not mean that as adults we do not have feelings, all humans have feelings, the crucial point is that we identify our emotions and rather than being dysregulated, we take responsibility and own the emotion, then we can take an action to assist us to resolve the problem. We also know that it is o.k. not to be o.k. and its o.k. to ask for help. Role modelling rather than hiding our feelings from children helps them learn that it’s normal to have feelings and it's normal to seek help. Talking to someone, (whilst it is not always easy) is the first step to getting assistance. At school we encourage this through talking to a friend, talking to a teacher, talking to someone that they trust.
Professional help is only a phone call away if required. Encouraging others in the school community to talk to someone who is neutral such as a GP, or other trusted health professional. We teach children to learn how to do this through the Zones of Regulation, through a spectrum of colours we help children identify that all colours are o.k. The hardest part is sometimes defining how we feel. As parents and teachers, we can work together to help children identify the Zone- tell me how your feeling, choose a colour if that’s easier, that best describes the emotion or feelings. Through increased language skills and comprehension, students move from a more simplified language of feeling angry (red zone) to being more articulate about the emotions and feelings they are experiencing. Emotional regulation skills in primary school become the foundation for our young adults and future leaders as they progress through their schooling to help them identify emotions such as feeling a sense of loneliness or feeling disappointed.
The term that is often used is ‘Name it to Tame it’, indicating the need to firstly have self-awareness, knowing which adjective best describes how I am feeling. The second step is then taking ownership or responsibility for that emotion. For example, ‘Yes, I feel happy...or I feel proud because...I did well on my assignment. Whilst on the flip side, " Yes I feel tired because...I stayed up late watching the Olympics or was on technology and had difficulty focusing during the maths test....” Taking responsibility means, that if I chose to stay up late then I need to take ownership of that choice and now I’m struggling in class to concentrate on my maths tasks.
The next step in the process is then problem solving. Through problem solving strategies we can help our children develop emotional intelligence, which is an essential skill and aptitude looked for in potential job candidates. Sometimes problem solving is best done with someone you trust and someone who is neutral.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and take responsibility for our emotions, identify others' emotions and why they might be feeling that way. Emotional intelligence also involves knowing how to interact appropriately with others even when the other person may be dysregulated. Emotional intelligence is a skill and taking control of our emotions and behaviours, like any skill requires practice, patience, time, and hard work.
If you would like more information on emotional intelligence, zones of regulation or learning how to help your child, please feel free to contact me via email, sarah.jackman@twb.catholic.edu.au

We have had a busy fortnight with lots of learning, book week, dress-up day and readers cup. We have more exciting things coming up towards the end of the term. It has been lovely to see some warmer weather. We ask that you ensure your child brings their water bottle to school every day and a change of shorts in case they get hot and would like to change out of track pants throughout the day.
Father’s Day:
Father’s Day celebrations this Thursday morning 29th August at 7:45 – 8:25am. All dads, grandads, stepdads or other significant men in our children’s lives are welcome to come to their child’s/grandchild’s prep classroom for ‘Tea and Toast’. Father’s Day Mass will be held in the school hall at 10:00 am followed by a sausage sizzle.
Swimming:
Swimming commences next week (week 9). We swim every day, which is very exciting so please make sure your child’s swimming gear is packed daily. Children need to bring togs, towels, jumpers and thongs. CHILDREN ARE NOT TO COME TO SCHOOL DRESSED IN THEIR TOGS – WE WILL GET CHANGED AT SCHOOL BEFORE GOING SWIMMING. Please ensure your child has practiced putting on and taking off their togs and also ensure all of their swimming gear is clearly named. Glennie provides the swimming caps.

Year 1
Welcome to Week 8! What fantastic learners the children are becoming! The children had an amazing day at the Pilton Zoo last week, making observations and taking note of the animals there and their habitats. They will now take what they have learned to build a diorama of an animal habitat. We were very proud of the way the children behaved during the day: they were fine examples of Lourdes Learners.
Next week is swimming week. Now is the time to check togs, towels, goggles, shoes, and permission. Children travel by bus to Glennie and get changed in the Glennie change rooms. We will speak to the children about appropriate behaviour but it would be appreciated if this could be reinforced at home as well. Remember children swim every day so they will be very tired by the end of the week!
We are looking forward to celebrating Mass this Thursday with our fathers for Father's Day. Fathers are welcome to sit on the floor with us.
On Wednesday, 11th September, the Prep-Year Two students will celebrate the Early Years. The celebration commences at 10:00 with a special Liturgy that everyone is welcome to attend. The children will then participate in lots of fun activities from 11:00 am-12:45 pm, before enjoying a sausage sizzle for lunch. We will need parent helpers to supervise the Year One craft activities – we will need at least two helpers for each class. Please let your child's teacher know if you are available to help.
Have a great week and we are looking forward to catching up with all of you at our parent-teacher interviews in the coming weeks. Just a reminder that 1T interviews will be in Term 4.
Thanks,
Laura, Jenny and Liz

Curriculum:
Religion – Students have explored influential individuals that have shaped the early Catholic Communities. These individuals include Mary MacKillop and Caroline Chisholm. Students are now beginning their next religious unit that explores the fertile question: How can believers live in their faith? Throughout this unit, students will identify ways in which faith can be shared and strengthened in communities of believers, including the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
English – Students have commenced writing their English Assessments for this term. One assessment piece involved the students drafting, editing, and publishing a historical narrative. They will also use their knowledge of a historical event or person from Australia’s history to write an informative brochure.
Maths – Students have commenced the next impact cycle, which involves describing and interpreting data sets. During this impact cycle, students will also create graphs, including side by side column graphs to display data sets. We will be continuing to touch on division, as continual practise in this concept will help consolidate the students' ability to solve problems as remainders, fractional remainders and as decimals. Students also learnt about transformations and estimated, measured and drew angles. Don’t forget to encourage number facts (multiplication, division, addition and subtraction) at home, to assist automaticity in this area.
HASS – We have started our Civics and Citizenship unit where students are investigating how democracy impacts the lives of citizens and society. In particular, they will look at democracy in our country, voting and decision making and resolving differences and achieving goals.
Science – Students have explored natural sources and artificial sources of light, described how light travels, and completed annotated diagrams showing both reflection and refraction of light.
Thanks for reading,

Our Learning:
English/ HaSS: We are creating multimodal persuasive texts to visit an Asian country of our choice. Sophistication of language features including rhetorical questions, imagery, modality, and use of noun groups form our success criteria. Check these WAGOLL’s:
Abbey: Would you like to escape to an archipelago paradise?
Emilyn: Step back in time and visit the Angkor Wat temple, the crown of Cambodia.
Benjamin: Thailand is the land of smiles. Be sure to visit Phuket, home to spectacular sandy beaches.
Homework:
Please note that homework runs from Friday to Friday and the option of Wednesday lunch time is encouraged for students who are finding these times frames difficult to balance. Homework for Year Six is minimal. The practice of completing homework and having a routine helps prepare our students for when secondary demands increase next year. Homework is necessary for consolidation, revision, and deliberate practice. The Homework Club is one of our Servaim opportunities and Year Six peers and Mr Shoebridge are available to help.
Mathematics Competition:
Congratulations to Nate, Rylan, Emilyn, Euan, Joey, and Jake who recently competed in the first round of the QAMT (Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers) Mathematics Competition. Our students competed in team events alongside Year 5 students- Sarah, Oscar, and Eli. All three teams progress to the next stage – The Darling Downs Mathematics finals in Term Four. This is great learning engagement as students were invested and driven to value their learning and act collaboratively with others.

Just as with any other classes, swimming is part of the curriculum and children are expected to participate unless a note of explanation is provided. Participation in this program is highly recommended for the students in Grades 4, 5 & 6, as many of the activities on camp are water-based.
We respectfully ask parents and other spectators to refrain from attending swimming lessons. It is important that the children are focused on their instructor and what they need to do in the pool. We appreciate your support.

Lourdes – you certainly know how to Book Week! We had the best time last week celebrating the Magic that is READING! Below are some photographs of our dress up day and other Book Week activities. Thank you, as always, for supporting the library as we work to develop a love of reading in your child/ren.
Congratulations to all the WINNERS announced on Assembly last Thursday and to the classes for their AMAZING Door displays. We appreciate the effort you all went to make Book Week great.
Holiday Borrowing
Students who have NO outstanding loans will be able to borrow for the upcoming school holidays in Week 10. Parents don’t forget that you are also able to loan 10 books at a time anytime, including holiday breaks.
Library Bags
It is expected the library books travel to and from school in a Library Bag. Please ensure that your child has a suitable (preferably waterproof) bag for borrowing each week.
Chess
On Tuesday 27th August, two teams of Lourdes children participated in the 2024 Chess Teams Tournament. They played 7 rounds, had some wins, had some losses, enjoyed their day and learnt a new move (or two). We are so proud of the way these students conducted themselves. Please be reminded that we do not offer Chess in Term 4 at Lourdes and we will resume lessons in Term 1, 2025. Thank you for supporting our Chess club in 2024.
Book Club Issue 6
Issue 6 Orders have been placed. Orders usually take about a week from the due date to arrive. Thank you for supporting Book Club at Lourdes in Term 3.

There is always something fun and exciting happening in our drama lessons. This is what we have been up to this term so far!
PREP students have been sharing in The Very Bear series of stories by Nick Bland. We are learning about feelings and how these emotions can be shown through our facial expressions, body movements and voice. We are having lots of fun pretending to be happy, sad, angry, confused, scared, excited and anything else we can think of!
Drama in YEAR 1 has seen us learning all about the Aboriginal Dreamtime story of Tiddalik the Frog. We have looked at lots of different Australian animals and have come up with some creative ideas about how each animal could make Tiddalik laugh. We are looking forward to performing our puppet shows.
YEAR 2 students have been looking at the Aboriginal Dreamtime story of How the Birds Got Their Colours. We have explored the different ways and reasons that stories can be shared. We are looking forward to sharing our puppet shows to the class over the next couple of weeks.
Along with some character work and drama games, the YEAR 5 and 6 students have been very busy preparing for their performance at our upcoming Art Show, "Loving the Arts at Lourdes". We are looking forward to seeing you all there on Friday 6th September and showcasing our wonderfully, talented students!

With only one week to go before judging for the Chronicle Garden Competition, the kids are naturally getting very excited. The recent rain and warm weather has certainly helped to boost their little plants along. It is such a beautiful time of the year in our gardens. Please feel free to come and have a look at their gardens at school drop off or pick up.
