Welcome back to the final term of 2024. The September holidays are always a wonderful time to be in Toowoomba with the weather and amazing gardens and parks to explore.
Gardening Club Success
Mrs Broderick and her team of student gardeners participate in ‘gardening club’ every week. They had great success in The Chronicle Garden Competition with the following placings:
- 2nd place- Student Garden
- 3rd place- School Premises
Thank you to Mrs Broderick for her time spent with our students and the time to make our gardens at Lourdes so wonderful!
Lourdes on the Lawn
This Saturday is our annual family event- Lourdes on the Lawn. If you are yet to buy your tickets, please do so through the link on OLOL Memos on Facebook or the link sent through your Sentral App. A reminder to parents that this is a P&F led event and families are responsible for the supervision of their own students. Students should not be attending without adult supervision. I look forward to seeing many of you there.
Blessing and Opening of New Administration and General Learning Areas
The official opening and blessing of the buildings at school is Tuesday, October 22. The buildings will be blessed by the Reverend Bishop Ken Howell and officially opened by the Hon Anthony Chisholm, representing the Australian Federal Government. This will be celebrated and acknowledged at school with the students and invited guests.
2025 Staffing and Class Placements of Students
To prepare for the staffing for 2025, it is important that I am working from accurate student numbers. If your child/ren is not returning in 2025, please advise the school via email: enrolments@ololtwb.catholic.edu.au
Throughout this term, staff will be working as a cohort to allocate students to classes for 2025. Academic, behaviour and social emotional considerations will be prioritised through this process. I am very proud of the teaching staff at Lourdes and have full confidence in their decisions when placing students.
Congratulations to Miss Dooley
Miss Dooley, Prep D teacher, is currently on leave celebrating her wedding. We congratulate Bec and wish her and her husband Brendan a wonderful future together. When Miss Dooley returns next week, she will be known as Mrs Judd.
Solar Installation
Over the school holidays, a solar system was installed at the school for support with our power supply. This will be a welcomed relief to our power bills, once it is fully functional.
10 Week Term
This term is a 10 week term. A few ways to support our students during this time of the year include:
- Maintaining routines both at home and school. Predictability supports everyone when we become tired.
- Establish positive conversations around the school day- what went well? What did you learn? Did anyone help you with a challenge today? Focusing on the positives supports our emotional wellbeing.
- Reminding our students/children about the learning pit. There are times in the school day where learning or friendships require us to seek support or ‘push through’. This is a normal part of school and life.
Kind regards,
Bridget

Welcome back to Term 4
Unbelievably, Term 4 is upon us! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are comfortably back into the routine of school term life. No doubt, it will be another exciting term of great progress and achievement for all our Lourdes Learners.
Standardised Testing
Each year, students in Years One to Six, undertake a series of standardised tests in Term Four in the areas of Reading, Spelling and Mathematics. Similar in style to NAPLAN, this is a one point in time assessment that is used in conjunction with other diagnostic, formative and summative assessment. These provide our teachers, and Teaching and Learning teams, the opportunity to monitor student growth over time.
Underpinning this testing process is a belief that, at any given time every student is, at some point in his or her learning, capable of further progress if they can be engaged, motivated and provided with relevant learning opportunities. Rather than expecting all students of the same age to be at the same point in their learning at the same time, a growth approach expects every student to make excellent learning progress over the course of a school year, regardless of their starting point. When students' performances are assessed from the perspective of a growth mindset, the focus is not so much on 'judging' as on understanding where individuals are in their learning at the time of assessment.
Assessment information of this kind provides starting points for teaching and learning. It enables learning activities to be selected and designed to maximise the likelihood of successful further learning now and in the future. It also assists teachers and students to set targets for further growth.

Welcome Back
Welcome back to Term 4. I hope everyone had a restful spring holiday and are ready for the next 9 weeks of fun filled OLOL action.
Garden Club
Congratulations to Mrs Broderick and her little team of gardeners – coming second in the Children’s Garden and third in the Premises Garden for the 2024 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.
Retreats
Last term our Year 3 cohort experienced a retreat about “Spring Renewal” We are lucky to be able to walk to Newtown Park and experience the beautiful trees and rose garden in the park. We had a beautiful day, listened to our meditation and then created some beautiful natural mandala pictures in groups.
Year 4 and 5 cohorts began this term with their class retreats at Newtown Park. The Year 4’s explored the gifts they have to share with others. It was so lovely to explore the park and it’s beautiful surroundings while doing the activities in the sunshine.
The Year 5 retreat focused on what are Good Leadership Qualities. It began with a meditation which reminded the students of the Leader within them – Jesus was a wonderful example of a leader who served others. He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us always, to help guide us in our decision making, they considered who around them demonstrated good leadership qualities.
Lourdes on the Lawn and Family Mass
This weekend OLOL P & F and the OLOL Parish have two great family events. Lourdes on the Lawn is on Saturday 12/10/2024 from 12- 5:30. The Parish Family Mass is on Sunday 13/10/2024. It will be great to see the three Mass Congregations gathering for Mass and morning tea at 9:30am. Students of the school have been invited to sing the reflection song “Thankful” during the Mass.
October is Rosary Month
The month of October is, regarded as the month of the Rosary so sharing a Hail Mary each day with your family is an enjoyable way to remember Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We thank the Diocesan Rosary Group for their donation of Rosary beads for our Year 5’s to use during their Rosary reflections.
Catholic Mission/Socktober
October is also World Mission Month – Catholic Mission asks us to donate to support their work in troubled areas of our world. We had our Crazy Sock Day last term and the money we collected will go to Catholic Mission.
We also donated new socks to the Base Soup Kitchen and they were super impressed with our boxes of donations – Thank to our community for supporting this giving initiative.
Official Building Opening and Blessing
On Tuesday 22nd of October, we have the Official Opening of our New Buildings. As we have several organisational tasks for that morning we would appreciate some help with the setup and clean up of the official Morning Tea. If anyone is available from 9 am that morning could you please let Mrs Moore know - Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au
Family, Health and Well-Being Weeks
In Week 3 and 4, it is Family and Health and Well-being Week. Each class will focus on the appropriate Personal Development programme for their year level. All families will receive a Sentral email outlining the topics of discussion. Please complete the acknowledgement of your email using the parent portal, so our teachers know you are aware the personal development programme is occurring. If you have any questions or queries about the topics your child’s class will explore, please contact your class teacher by this Friday 11th October.
On Friday, 25th October it is our “Wear Red for Daniel” Day – A Day when we remember the special messages, reminders, and advice of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Foundation. We explore ways to keep ourselves safe. Wear something that is “sun safe red” and bring a gold coin so we can support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to continue in their quest to keep all children safe.
We have planned a "Red” walk to Newtown Park.
The plan for the morning is:
- a talk from our Police family
- complete a walk around our Newtown Block
- then return to school for morning tea together.
Our walk signifies the distance Daniel walked to the bus stop – but the difference is we walk with friends who keep us safe. Our Lourdes family is lucky to have some special police officers who will be coming along to encourage us all to Recognise, React and Report, if we feel we are in danger. Parent and Carers are welcome to join us - we leave the school at 9 am.
Volunteers Morning Tea
It is our Volunteers Thank-You Morning Tea on Tuesday, 12th November -9:30 am in the staffroom. If you have helped in any way throughout the year, we invite you to come along so we can thank you for your help. Please RSVP by Wednesday 6th November via our Volunteers Morning Tea form:
This term we are collecting non-perishable grocery, toiletry and Christmas items to make up hampers for our local St Vincent De Paul Chapter. If you wish to donate a gift card – that is also an option. The members of St Vincent De Paul have always been very grateful for the generosity of the community of OLOL. This is a way for us to support those less fortunate than ourselves, to enjoy a special Christmas. We plan to give these donations to members of our St Vincent De Paul Chapter at our 12 noon End of Year Mass on Friday 6th December. Donations of non-perishable items – cans of vegetables, soup, spaghetti, pasta, rice, - toiletries – toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, special Christmas treats – chips, chocolates, nuts,... Remember to check use-by dates. Please send in your donations to your class teacher and thank you for supporting St Vincent De Paul in this way. Prep
Welcome to Term 4, and what a great term it’s going to be!
English: We have started well as Fairy Tale detectives, always on the lookout for clues to help us solve problems. Asking questions is a great way to learn – who, what, when, where, and why are good question starters.
MAP Time: We begin MAP time this Friday (make and play). The children are divided into groups with the Year 1s and will enjoy a variety of activities over a 6-week period, taking place each Friday from 2pm to 2.45. This is part of our transition into Year 1.
Class Led Assemblies: In Term 4, each class will present the assembly prayer. Prep H will present this Thursday (10 October), Prep C will present on Thursday of Week 3 (17 October), and Prep D/J will present on Thursday of Week 6 (7 November). Assembly takes place at 2pm in the hall. Please practise at home with your child if they have a reading/speaking part.
Health and Well Being Weeks: To be held in Week 3 and Week 4, we will emphasise the importance of caring for our bodies. We have some guest speakers coming along to speak to the children about what it means to be healthy and safe. You will receive a notice via the parental portal with further information.
Homework: A new homework book was issued to the children. Please complete the homework book and return it to the classroom each Thursday. Please continue with your reading practise (decodable readers form part of our library borrowing), and don’t forget to continue practising previously learnt sight words to ensure they remain in the memory bank.
Jumpers: We experienced some unusually cold days last week. As we only have limited spare jumpers, please pack a jumper in your child’s bag in case if we do experience another cold change.
Congratulations to Mrs Judd: We congratulate Miss Dooley and her new husband, who celebrated their wedding on Saturday. We look forward to welcoming Miss Dooley back as Mrs Judd on Monday of Week 3. We had the privilege of organising a practise wedding, that the children were all a part of. Needless to say, the children were very excited to be involved in the special occasion.
Melita, Amy and Becky
Year 1
Welcome to Term 4. We are looking forward to a fun and busy final term of learning. It is hard to believe that we only have 9 weeks left with our little Year 1’s before they become big Year 2’s!
This term in English, we will be reading "Grandpa and Thomas" by Pamela Allen. We will practice identifying nouns and verbs throughout the story. We will then learn how to write a procedure by using verbs to write command sentences. The children will complete the unit by writing a procedure on how to build a sandcastle, and then follow their procedure to paint and decorate one.
In Maths, we will be covering the topics Measurement and Capacity, Counting Collections, Bridging Through 10, and Sharing Equally, whilst continuing to problem solve and use the addition and subtraction strategies we know. We will discover Forces in Science and learn about the concepts of push and pull, gravity, and friction. There will even be an opportunity to dress up as scientists for our much-anticipated Science Day, where children will apply their knowledge to design, build, and test their own push-pull toy.
In Religion, we will learn who Mary is and why she is important. Using stories from the Bible, we will create a timeline of the main events in Mary’s life. We will then look at the symbols of Christmas and children will have the opportunity to make each symbol as we learn about it. During Health and Wellbeing in weeks 3 and 4, we recognise that our bodies are a gift from God and we will discuss the importance of keeping our bodies safe.
Year 1 students are looking forward to participating in Make and Play (MAP) time with the Preps each Friday afternoon in weeks 2-7 this term. Each week, groups will go to a different year 1 or Prep teacher to participate in a fun, hands-on activity. This gives the Prep students a chance to see the Year 1 classrooms and the Year 1 students have the responsibility to model Year 1 behaviours and help the Preps.
We hope to see you at Lourdes on the Lawn this Saturday. Once again, Year 1 will be running the chocolate toss to raise money for learning resources, so please come along and join in the fun!
Laura, Jenny and Dennielle
Year 2
Welcome back! It was great to see so many smiling faces last week and to hear about the students' holidays.
This term, we will explore sound in Science, follow and create algorithms in Technology, develop persuasive writing skills, and consolidate our knowledge of place value, multiplication, and division in Maths. In Religion, we are learning how to say sorry and forgive. Next week, we will complete our personal development lessons.
Remember, Lourdes on the Lawn is this Saturday 12th October and the Parish Family Mass this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. All students who attend the Family Mass will be invited to the front to lead the ‘Thankful’ reflection song. There will be morning tea following mass. All are welcome!
On Friday 25th October, we will participate in the ‘Red Walk for Daniel’. Students are asked to wear sun-safe red clothing and bring a gold coin donation for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Further information can be found in the RE newsletter notes.
Have a great week.
Sarah, Ange B and Ange G
Year 3
Welcome to our final term of 2024! We have jumped straight into our Term Four concepts and are enjoying making discoveries and connections to new learning!
In Maths, we are exploring the following topics:
- Mass – estimate, compare and measure the mass of objects using grams and kilograms
- Maps
- Statistics and graphing
- Place value – continuing beyond 10 000
- Addition and subtraction
- Multiplication and division – revision of 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 times tables
In English this term, we are exploring the persuasive genre. Students will write a persuasive letter to a member of the leadership team or Mrs Broderick to convince them to purchase a beehive for the school.
In HASS, students are looking at civics and citizenship, beginning with learning about community. We will move towards rules and responsibilities within a community towards the end of term.
We will be exploring solids and liquids in Science this term. Students will be participating in various investigations to see the effect adding or removing heat has on these states of matter.
In Religion, we are exploring the prayers of the Saints and images of God. Students will continue to explore and practice meditation skills during class prayer experiences.
Health lessons this term will be focussed on the Daniel Morcombe curriculum. Students will be identifying safety clues as well as strategies to keep themselves safe. As part of this learning, students will participate in Personal Development lessons. Please keep an eye out for information in the coming days.
We are excited to introduce “Discovery Hour” this term. Students will be completing some fantastic activities across the term. Keep an eye on the newsletter for what we get up to in this time! If you have any shoe boxes, paddle pop sticks, or disposable straws, it would be greatly appreciated if they could be brought into school to support these fantastic projects.
Thanks for reading!
Mel, Demi, and Renee
Year 4
Welcome to Term 4! It’s hard to believe we are in the final term for the year. This term as always, we have hit the ground running. In English, we are delving into the world of narrative writing, learning to sequence our ideas, develop emotive and descriptive vocabulary as well as a variety of sentence starters. In Science, we are learning about different forces such as friction, gravity, and magnetic forces. We will be participating in a variety of experiments where we make predictions and record our observations and learnings.
Homework has been sent home. Spelling will be pre-tested and post-tested and students are asked to learn the highlighted words in their homework booklet. Please check that your child is reading on a regular basis and that all written homework is completed on time.
Personal Development is next week. A permission note was sent home for you to complete. Any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to ask.
A Sentral note was also sent home, about PCYC Safe Cycling Program, which takes place during weeks three and four this term. The children will be transported to Groom Park via bus, departing OLOL at 9:30 am and return at approximately 2:00 pm. 4L will attend the program on Monday 14th October and Thursday 17th October. 4V will attend the program on Tuesday 15th October and Friday 18th October. 4T will attend on Wednesday 16th October and Monday 21st October. The total cost will be $20 per student and will be charged to your school fees. Students will take their school bags with them and need to have their lunch, a hat and plenty of water. Please send along a little extra food as the children tend to be extra hungry while on excursions. Students are to wear their sports uniform and are encouraged to bring their own helmets, if possible.
Looking forward to a fabulous term!
Suzanne, Aleisha, Jessica and Danielle

I’m sure there are some very excited children for our upcoming Year 5 camp. Please ensure that any items, especially clothing, are labelled with your child’s name. Year 6
Welcome back to what promises to be the fastest term in history! This term will fly by – camp, end of year celebrations, final assembly, graduation Mass and a swimming carnival will keep us busy right up to the beginning of December.
Important dates and information for this term include the following:
Camp: Camp forms have been sent out – please complete as soon as possible.
Friday Sport: OLOL will not be participating in competitive Friday afternoon inter- school sport during Term 4.
Graduation Celebrations: Final Assembly and Graduation Mass: Thursday 28th November 12 noon – final assembly, 12 noon, school hall – Year 6 lead this assembly. Formal summer uniform to be worn. (Students will practise for their final Mass in the afternoon so are therefore asked to remain at school after the assembly.) End of year awards – academic excellence, academic diligence, enhancement of learning, sports awards, arts awards, and Serviam Awards are also presented at this assembly.
Mass: Tuesday 3rd December 6.30 pm in the Church (Formal summer uniforms to be worn to both celebrations – no ballgowns or suits required!)
Swimming Carnival: Thursday 5th December. All students are required to attend this event and should not exclude themselves from this carnival due to weather conditions or a dislike of swimming. Students are reminded to nominate for events they are capable of swimming. Our school carnival operates under Swimming Australia rules - students competing in competitive events will need to demonstrate correct strokes, turns, starts, and finishes during competitive races.
Last Day of School: Friday 6th December – students may depart after the end of year Mass which will take place in the hall at 12 noon.
Term 4 Units: This term we will study transformations and tessellating patterns, probability and problem solving in financial contexts in Mathematics (all students will remain in their home classes for Mathematics this term), The Highway Man and Slam Poetry in English, as well as grammar, punctuation, spelling and reading groups, a unit entitled “Celebration and Prayer” in Religion, Habitats in Science and Australia’s Relationship with the Rest of the World (Global Citizenship) in HASS. We will continue our Health unit from Term 3 entitled “Transitioning”.
Library: Library borrowing will continue each Tuesday this term.
Absences/Late to School: It would be great if we could have all students on board, on time, each day and if families could try and keep appointments, late arrivals, early departures, rest days off etc. to a minimum during this busy term. Several students struggled last term to catch up on missed work and it is almost impossible for us to keep a tab on what students are missing.
First Day Photos: Thanks to those families who handed in their photos before the end of last term. These photos have been scanned, saved and are ready to go for graduation celebrations! It would be appreciated if photos could be forwarded to Shauna.Coren@twb.catholic.edu.au Kylie.McKenzie@twb.catholic.edu.au or Steven.Shoebridge@twb.catholic.edu.au as soon as possible.
Homework: Homework began last Friday and will conclude at the end of Week 8, with a break during camp week! As usual, homework consists of Maths Online and Reading Eggs, as well as a weekly written spelling activity.
QAMT Mathematics Competition: We wish our Mathematicians – Euan, Joey, Emilyn, Rylan, Nate and Jake all the best for the Regional Finals of the QAMT Maths Competition which will be held at the Salo Centre on Thursday 10 October.

The Carnival is for children in Grades 3-6 ONLY.
All students in grade 3 who are born in 2016 will be eligible to swim, however, as they are not of appropriate age, they will not be eligible for age championship points. As with Cross Country and Track & Field, there will not be an age championship for these students, nor will records be kept. They will simply be participating in this carnival to provide them with a valuable experience and to gain participation house points.
POINTS ALLOCATION & AGE CHAMPIONSHIPS
25m Events
1 point will be awarded to respective houses for each 25m swim completed. Results from 25m events will not contribute to Age Championship points.
50m, 100m and Individual Medley Events
The following points will be awarded to respective houses and individual age championship tallies following all 50m, 100m and Individual Medley Events:
1st Place – 10 Points (Blue Ribbon), 2nd Place – 6 points (Red Ribbon), 3rd Place – 4 Points (Green Ribbon), 4th Place – 2 Points (Yellow Ribbon) and 5th – 10th Place – 2 Points
Where there is more than one heat, points and ribbons will be awarded to the fastest swimmers overall. Students who are hoping to be considered for their respective age championship should swim as many 50/100m events as possible.
PLEASE ONLY NOMINATE YOUR CHILD FOR EVENTS THAT THEY CAN COMPETENTLY AND CONFIDENTLY COMPETE IN.
HOW TO NOMINATE
You will receive a Sentral App Permission request. This request will require you to select which events your child would like to swim in.
Nomination Guidelines – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
- Students can choose between the 25M OR 50M Event in each stroke.
- Students can choose to ADD 100m events, regardless of whether they have chosen the 25m or 50m event in each stroke.
- It is expected that all children in Grades 3-6 nominate themselves for at least one event.
- If you have not received the request, please contact Carla in the front office to check/update your details.
- All nominations need to be in by Sunday 24th November 2024.
- A nomination confirmation note will be sent home once all nominations are in. Please make sure you check your child’s nominations carefully; no changes will be made on the day.
- Please refer to the examples below:
Example 1: Jane is 12 years old and is a strong swimmer who would like to contest the age championship. To achieve this, she needs to nominate for as many 50m and 100m events as possible. SWIMMING LESSONS
Fun had by all on the final swimming lesson in Week 9 of Term 3!
Welcome Back! Term 4 is always an exciting time of year. This term we focus on Internet Safety in our Library and Technology lessons. Please remind your child about their library day each week and ensure that they have a library bag for transporting books to and from school. If students forget their library bag or they are away for any reason, the library is open for quick swaps from 8am-8:30am daily or most lunch breaks.
Practical tips for parents to support online safety for their children:
- Set Clear Rules: Define specific times for internet use and ensure devices are used in common areas. Agree on safe games, sites and APPs.
- Use Parental Controls: Block inappropriate content and monitor online activity.
- Teach Privacy: Educate children about not sharing personal information and using privacy settings.
- Encourage Communication: Create a safe space for children to talk about their online experiences.
- Model Good Habits: Demonstrate responsible online behaviour and balance screen time.
- Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest apps and trends, and use resources from trusted organisations like the eSafety Commissioner.
- Check In: Don’t assume that no news is good news. Check in with your child about their online activities. Ask questions, get involved and be active in their online activities.
These steps can help create a safer online environment for your children. If you need more detailed advice, feel free to ask or check out the information for Parents | eSafety Commissioner.
End of Year Procedures
Outstanding Loans
Final loans will happen in Week 6 and all loans will need to be returned by the end of Week 7. All loans still outstanding (overdue or otherwise) by the end of Week 8 will be charged, in full, to school accounts. Please ensure timely return of all resources to avoid charges and come to see us if you have any issues or think a loan has been returned (sometimes things get put in incorrect piles or helpful students put them away without us scanning them!).
Stocktake
In Week 8 – 10 we will be conducting our end-of-year Stocktake and continuing to repurpose our old readers into thematic boxes to enhance student knowledge in specific, curriculum driven, content areas.
Final loans will happen in Week 6 and all loans will need to be returned by the end of Week 7. All loans still outstanding by the end of Week 8 will be charged, in full, to school accounts.
Scholastic Book Club
Issue 7 Brochures have been sent home and orders are due by COB Wednesday 16th October, 2024. We usually expect delivery of items one week after the order has been placed. Thank you for your patience and supporting Book Club at Lourdes.
Chess Club
Please be reminded that we do not offer Chess in Term 4 as Mr Lord lends his expertise to Glenvale State School at this time. Thank you again to everyone who has supported Chess Club this year. We look forward to lessons resuming in Term 1, 2025.
Enjoy your books!

Choir Rehearsal
A reminder to all Choir students that we will continue to rehearse in Term 4 at morning tea (first half of morning tea) on MONDAYS. Please bring your lunch and hats. Rehearsals are in the Music Room.
Thank you - Mrs Rosier.
OLOL had the enormous honour of receiving 2 awards in this years Chronicle Garden Competition for the Carnival of Flowers. We came second in the kids veggie garden and third in school gardens. The kids were very excited.
