Welcome Back to Term 4.
Thought for the Day:
By remembering the past, acknowledging the present,
we look forward to the future...
2023, so far has been a year of changes, change in principals, classrooms, playgrounds and in some cases teachers – we must continue to be grateful for all the things the community of Our Lady of Lourdes offers us – we now look forward to the next 8 weeks of the 2023 school year. Eight weeks filled with finishing off and fulfilling the potential for our learning. Our Year 6 students have been and will continue to experience a sense of “this is the last time.... “but it isn’t the last time – it is a time of adding to, getting ready for new beginnings, new experiences, and time for embracing the past, acknowledging the present and looking forward to the future.
I hope everyone had an amazing Spring Holiday. The Toowoomba Gardens were so pretty. Commiserations to the Brisbane Lions and the Broncos supporters – both teams played well to reach the Grand Final but were pipped at the final siren. We often discuss playing for the full eighty minutes – that is what we need to do until that bell rings at the end our year on December 1!
As we begin the final term for 2023.
We welcome back Mrs. Broderick, she and her husband Steve have done a wonderful job planting and tending to our gardens and new turf over the holidays. The gardens and turf look amazing. We thank Mr. Hewett for doing some pruning and tidying up of our gardens and footpath shrubs.
We have a busy term 4 ahead. Our Year 5’s are currently at Camp Tallebudgera enjoying the challenges of camp. They will return this afternoon. All reports so far are they are having a fabulous time. I’m sure there will be some wonderful stories told over the next few days – Camps are such memorable events in our students’ lives. We thank our teachers who have organized, participated and supervised in this camp experience. Parents will be notified of the arrival time via SMS text.
We advertised for a tuckshop convenor and we have appointed Mrs Kerry Royal. We plan to have our first tuckshop day on Friday 20th October 2023.
We acknowledge the support and work from our previous tuckshop convenor Mrs Teagan Harch - who did a wonderful job of keeping our tuckshop going by providing special days - unfortunately Covid and the extended building program played havoc with this service and Teagan was employed elsewhere. Thank You Teagan!
Parents can sign up to Flexischools via www.flexischools.com.au. Students from 1-6 will be able to order from tuckshop. Orders will need to be in by 6:00pm Thursdays.
Mrs Royal will be looking for Tuckshop Volunteers for Fridays. Volunteers usually work from 8:30am – 2:30pm.
If you are available to volunteer on:
Week 3 Friday 20th October 2023
Week 4 Friday 27th October 2023
Week 5 Friday 3rd November 2023
Week 6 Friday 10th November 2023
Week 7 Friday 17th November 2023
Week 8 Friday 24th November 2023
Week 9 Friday 1st December 2023 (no tuckshop – but clean up)
Please let us know at the office, email the school or myself (Janice.Moore@twb.catholic.edu.au) so Kerry can set up a roster for Term 4. We need at least 2 volunteers per day. Looking forward to lots of volunteers!

Renewal of Action Plans
As of 2024, Our Lady of Lourdes will require all Action Plans and Medical Alerts to be reviewed every 12 months.
This is a TCS Procedure that we are obligated to follow.
If your medical practitioner directs you to have your child’s plan reviewed less or more frequently, please advise the Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator (WHSC) of their wishes via email: Rachel.Wigan@twb.catholic.edu.au
Likewise, all Action Plans and Medical Alerts should be directed to the WHSC, Rachel Wigan, to be uploaded to our system. Once uploaded the class teacher will be able to access a copy.
It is important that we have the most up to date plan on file to ensure staff are able to manage the health and wellbeing of all their students.
Kind Regards
Rachel Wigan

Faith & Religious Education News
Welcome back to Term 4. I hope everyone had a restful spring holiday and are ready for the next 8 weeks of fun filled OLOL action.
Last term our Year 5 and 3 cohorts experienced their class retreats at Newtown Park. The Year 5 retreat focused on what are Good Leadership Qualities. It began with a meditation which reminded the students of the Leader within them – Jesus was a wonderful example of a leader who served others. He sent the Holy Spirit to be with us always, to help guide us in our decision making. The students considered who around them demonstrated good leadership qualities.
Year 3 ‘s retreat was about “Spring Renewal.” We are lucky to be able to walk to Newtown Park and experience the shady trees and rose garden. We had a beautiful day, listened to our meditation and then created some beautiful natural mandala pictures in groups.
This weekend OLOL P & F and the OLOL Parish have two great family events. Lourdes on the Lawn is on Saturday 14th October 2023 from 12:00 noon- 5:30pm.
The Parish Family Mass is on Sunday 15th October 2023. It will be great to see the Three Mass Congregations gathering for Mass and morning tea at 9:30am. Students of the school have been invited to sing the reflection song “Thankful” during the Mass. Morning Tea in the hall will follow Mass. All are welcome.
The month of October is, regarded as the month of the Rosary so sharing a Hail Mary each day with your family is an enjoyable way to remember Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We thank the Diocesan Rosary Group for their donation of Rosary beads for our Year 5’s to use during their Rosary reflections.
October is also World Mission Month – Catholic Mission asks us to donate to support their work in troubled areas of our world. We had our Crazy Sock Day last term and the money we collected will go to Catholic Mission.
We also donated new socks to the Base Soup Kitchen and they were super impressed with our boxes of donations – Thank to our community for supporting this giving initiative.
In Week 3 and 4, it is Family and Health and Well-being Week. Each class will focus on the appropriate Personal Development programme for their year level. All families will receive a Sentral email outlining the topics of discussion. Please complete the acknowledgement of your email using the parent portal, so our teachers know you are aware the personal development programme is occurring. If you have any questions or queries about the topics your child’s class will explore, please contact your class teacher by this Friday 13th October.
On Friday, 27th October it is our “Wear Red for Daniel” Day – A Day when we remember the special messages, reminders, and advice of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Foundation. We explore ways to keep ourselves safe. Wear something that is “sun safe red” and bring a gold coin so we can support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to continue in their quest to keep all children safe.
We have planned a "Red” walk to Newtown Park.
The plan for the morning is:
- a talk from our Police family
- complete a walk around our Newtown Block
- then return to school for morning tea together.
Our walk signifies the distance Daniel walked to the bus stop – but the difference for us, is we walk with friends who keep us safe. Our Lourdes family is lucky to have some special police officers who will be coming along to encourage us all to Recognise, React and Report, if we feel we are in danger. Parent and Carers are welcome to join us - we leave the school at 9 am.
This term we are collecting non-perishable grocery, toiletry and Christmas items to make up hampers for our local St Vincent De Paul Chapter. If you wish to donate a gift card – that is also an option. The members of St Vincent De Paul have always been very grateful for the generosity of the community of OLOL. This is a way for us to support those less fortunate than ourselves, to enjoy a special Christmas. We plan to give these donations to members of our St Vincent De Paul Chapter at our 12 noon End of Year Mass on Friday 1st December. We need things like non-perishable items – cans of vegetables, soup, spaghetti, pasta, rice, - toiletries – toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, special Christmas treats – chips, chocolates, nuts,... Remember to check use-by dates. Please send in your donations to your class teacher and thank you for supporting St Vincent De Paul in this way. We are being Global Citizens by helping our local community.,
Our Volunteers Morning tea is on Tuesday 14th November at 10 am -To say thank you, to the many people who have helped in our school, we have a Volunteers Morning Tea in the school staffroom. Please mark it in your diary, let the office know if you are coming and we will share some refreshments.
Please remember our Thursday Assemblies start at 2:00pm.
We have an assembly in Week 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8 this term.

Welcome to Term 4 and what a great term it’s going to be!
We’ve started well as Fairy Tale detectives, always on the look out for clues to help us solve problems. Asking questions is a great way to learn – who, where, when, why and what are some good question starters.
We will be enjoying our Fairy Tale Banquet on the 3rd of November. The children may come to school dressed as their favourite fairy tale character and present to their class an explanation of WHO they are, What happens in the story and WHY they like that fairy tale. Lunch will be provided on that day and hopefully the big bad wolf or the nasty giant don’t hear about our banquet!
We begin MAP time this Friday (make and play). Children are divided into 5 groups with the Grade 1s and enjoy a variety of activities over a five week period each Friday from 2pm to 2.45. This is part of our transition into Grade 1. The Prep W activity involves box construction so we would be grateful for any box donations please.
In Term 4 each class has the opportunity to present the assembly prayer. Prep W will present this Thursday and Prep H next Thursday – 2pm in the hall. Please practise with your child if they have a particular reading.
Week 3 and Week 4 are our Health and Well Being weeks when we emphasise the importance of caring for our bodies. We have some guest speakers coming along to speak to the children about what it means to be healthy and safe. You will receive a notice via the parental portal and a hard copy explaining what’s happening.
Homework this term is a revision of the year! Putting it all together plus lots of reading, both children practising and children enjoying stories.
Cheers,
Melita, Liz and Loretta

Year 1
Welcome to Term 4 and what a busy term it will be! Our Year One students are growing up and are becoming independent and responsible Lourdes Learners. Last week, all students completed their standardised tests with maturity and showed great resilience when answering difficult questions.
In English, the children will learn how to write a procedure. They will read the text, Grandpa and Thomas by Pamela Allen, which is a lovely story about a day spent at the beach. The text is simple; however, the children will learn how to turn a statement into a command by rearranging the verb in the sentences from the text. They will use these sentences to write a procedure on how to build a sandcastle.
This term, we investigate the stories about Mary in the Bible. As the children gather evidence of her presence in the life of Jesus and build their knowledge of Mary, they will create a timeline detailing her life.
In Science, the children will explore the concept of force. They will build up their knowledge of objects and how force generates their movement. On Monday, 6th November the children will participate in a Day of Science. The children can come dressed as Scientists and they will use the day to design, build and test a vehicle.
We are looking forward to catching up with families at Lourdes on the Lawn on Saturday and the Family Mass on Sunday. The Year One Chocolate Toss will be operating on Saturday.
Laura, Jenny and Dennielle
Year 2
Welcome back! It was great to see so many smiling faces last week and to hear about the students' holidays.
This term, we will be exploring sound in Science, following and creating algorithms in Technology, developing persuasive writing skills and consolidating our knowledge of place value, multiplication and division in Maths. Next week, we will be completing our personal development lessons and will have a visit from Healthy Harold and Life Education.
Don’t forget about Lourdes on the Lawn this Saturday and the Parish Family Mass on Sunday at 9:30am. A reminder that all students who attend the Family Mass will be invited to the front to lead the ‘Thankful’ reflection song. Morning tea and face painting will be held in the school hall after Mass. All are welcome!
On Friday 27th October, we will participate in the ‘Day for Daniel’. Students are asked to wear sun-safe red clothing and bring a gold coin donation for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Further information can be found in the RE newsletter notes.
Have a great week.

Welcome to Term 4 and what promises to be the fastest term of the year! Term 4 is always a super busy, fun, jam-packed term. It is hard to believe that the children have almost finished Year 3. We would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. Let’s finish the year strong!
We have been busy with Whole School Testing. These tests are important snapshots into the students learning. As with all testing, this will form part of the judgements made for reporting time. It is always interesting and exciting to see the student's growth over the year.

- English: This term in English, we are learning about Persuasive writing for our first cycle of learning. We have been learning about Fact and Opinion and the importance of understanding the difference between these when we are working with persuasive writing. Expanding on this we will be using modality words in our writing. These words help us to make our point in writing persuasively. To finalise our unit of work in the coming weeks, we will be writing a letter to Ms Murray to try and persuade her to allow us to get a Native Bee Hive in the school!
- Science: In Science this term, we are learning about the States of Matter. We are investigating what Solids, Liquids and Gases are and how we can change the states of matter.
- HASS: We are learning about rules and decision making. We have had so many wonderful discussions about why we have rules, who makes the rules and decisions in formal situations such as governments and informal situations such as our families.
Thanks for reading!

Year 4
Welcome to Term 4! It’s hard to believe we are in the final term for the year. This term as always, we have hit the ground running. In English we are delving into the world of persuasive writing, learning the structure of a Lawyer paragraph, and developing convincing arguments using high modality vocabulary. In Science we are learning about different forces such as friction, gravity and magnetic forces. We will be participating in a variety of experiments where we make predictions and record our observations and learnings.
Homework has been sent home. Spelling will be pre-tested and post tested and students are asked to learn the highlighted words in their homework booklet. Please check that your child is reading on a regular basis and that all written homework is completed on time. (Maths is not online this term.)
Personal Development is next week. A permission note was sent home for you to complete. Any questions or queries please don’t hesitate to ask.
A note was also sent home about PCYC Safe Cycling Program, which takes place during weeks three and four this term. The children will be transported to Groom Park via bus, departing OLOL at 9:30am and return at approximately 2:40pm. 4L will attend the program on Monday 16th of October and Thursday 19th October. 4V will attend the program on Tuesday 17th of October and Friday 20th October. 4T will attend on Wednesday 19th October and Monday 23rd October. The total cost will be $20 per student and will be charged to your school fees. Students will take their school bags with them and need to have their lunch, a hat and plenty of water. Please send along a little extra food as the children tend to be extra hungry while on excursions. Students are to wear their sport's uniform and are encouraged to bring their own helmets, if possible.
Looking forward to a fabulous term!
Suzanne, Aleisha, Jessica and Danielle

Year 5

It will be busy, but as always, we will take opportunities to reflect on how grateful we are to have all these experiences that make our school and lives richer.
Camp
I’m sure there will be some very tired students returning home today and there are definitely 5 very tired teachers as well. The students had a wonderful time participating in a variety of challenging activities including body boarding, rock climbing, indigenous orienteering, team challenge, beach games and canoeing. It is times like this when students achieve a milestone that makes teaching a rewarding profession. The behaviour shown at the camp was exceptional and is a great indication of the type of leaders these students will be next year. Thank you to Mr Franzmann and Mrs Coren for attending the camp with us and assisting the teachers and students.
Week 3
Students in English are looking at the point of view portrayed by authors and then writing summaries and recommendations about pages from a given book examined. Our summarising skills are being put to the test with a 25 word limit to share the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. In Maths we are moving onto our next impact cycle where we focus on grid referencing systems. Parents, it might be time to challenge your kids to a game of battleship.
Homework
Homework will begin Monday of week 3 and then will continue until week 8. Homework structure will remain the same.
Uniforms
A reminder that we wear sports uniform on Wednesday and Friday. All other days students should be in their formal summer uniform.

5 for 50 study strategy
This term, we are beginning a study routine which we believe will assist students going forward into high school. 5 for 50 advocates 5 minutes of daily revision for each 50-minute lesson attended. Five minutes will be spent at the beginning of each rotation/three days per week, recalling, retrieving, and restudying the content from the previous lesson. How can students retrieve this information? These examples may assist – write 3 new facts, make a 30-word summary, write definitions, draw diagrams, or create mind maps. Students are expected to follow this routine each evening for English and Mathematics.
Assessment Planners
These have been distributed to all students along with Term Four Timetable. Students use these in their study spaces at home to build organization, time management and planning. All assessment will be complete by beginning of Week 8. Thank you for keeping absences to a minimum for best student outcomes and finishing Term Four strongly.
Final Assembly
All students will wear formal summer uniforms. However, require a plain white T-shirt to wear over the top as part of our final dance.
Kylie, Shauna, and Steve
STEM
Year 3
In Term 3 students worked on creating their own digital story book in power point. The students mastered a lot of new digital skills including creating links, action buttons, transitions and making stories interactive for the reader. The students had lots of fun adding pictures, creating a background, and adding special effects. Lots of remarkable stories were created.
Year 4
Students investigated the different digital systems and the components of a computer. They became familiar with hardware and software components in digital systems and how peripheral devices have many functions. They also had the opportunity to begin developing coding skills that are used to solve codes.
Year 5
Last term students explored a variety of animal adaptations and how they help them to survive in their environment. Each student designed and created a new species of animal that had a unique feature and decided where they would live. Lots of interesting new animals were created.
Visual Arts
This term each year level will complete several pieces of art using the principles of design and element of art. I didn’t get a chance to take photos this week but take a look at the cool animal faces the year 3’s made last term.
Prep: This term we will have two main focuses, fairytales and Christmas. As always, each week we will focus on using different techniques to create our artworks. We began the term with a picture of the three little pigs, using shapes, pastels and water colours. This week we will use collage to create a picture of the big bad wolf.
Year 1: Our first focus has been on using shape and lines to create 2D cat statues. The image is drawn in black and white with different patterns or designs on each cat. This week they will use a strong colour for the background to create emphasis.
Year 2: Spring is the theme of our first project, the students drew a butterfly with strong black lines in oil pastel. This week we will use water colours to paint each section of the wing, focusing on blending. The background will also be painted with water colours but then sprinkled with rock salt to create an interesting effect.
Year 3: The Year 3’s are working on an image of an owl in a forest, the students have used a variety of painting techniques to create a realistic impression of the forest. This week we will draw and paint the owl to sit in the forest.
Year 4: The Year 4’s are drawing a detailed picture of an insect. Using a 2 B pencil they are exploring how to create, value (dark and light) as well as using different lines to sketch the detail of the insect. Once the sketch is complete, they will paint the background with analogous colours (those that are next to each other on the colour wheel).
Mrs Loretta Simmons

This term we will revise out Term 3 work and extend into learning the names of body parts. The students will create simple sentences to describe themselves and to describe others.
Eg. Ho gli occhi azzurri. Tu hai gli occhi verdi. I have blue eyes. You have green eyes.

LEGAL STROKE ACTIONS & DISQUALIFICATIONS
- In 50m and 100m events, except for the 8 years category, students will be judged and disqualified if their stroke does not meet the appropriate standard. As points gained from these events go towards age championship tallies, it is important that only legal stroke actions are awarded.

Cricket
On Wednesday 4th October the Year 5 and 6 students at OLOL participated in cricket coaching clinics at school during PE classes. The Year 3 and 4 students were also given the opportunity to take part in these sessions on Tuesday 10th October. The Prep to Year 2 students were excited they could also participate in the program at the Under 8’s day. The students participated with enthusiasm in different drills that focused on bowling, batting, fielding, and wicket keeping. These activities allowed them to further develop their hand-eye coordination and batting techniques with the assistance from two Queensland Cricket coaches Lachlan and Alind. If students would like to sign up for the closest cricket club near school, it is the Northern Brothers Diggers Cricket Club. Please read the flyer attached for more information as this is a wonderful sporting opportunity for all students. I understand that the cricket season started on Thursday 5th October however, I have been advised that you can still sign up your child to play. Thank you to Alind and Lachlan for allowing the students at OLOL the opportunity to be a part of this Cricket clinic and learn the skills needed to play the great game.
